WASHINGTON DC -– The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) has announced its historic decision to drop its long-held secessionist agenda and to embrace the unity of Ethiopia under a genuine federal arrangement that must guarantee the rights, equality and liberty of all Ethiopians.
In a historic press release, the OLF, led by Brigadier General Kemal Gelchu, issued at the conclusion of its extraordinary National Council plenary, held on December 30 and 31 in Minnesota, the front spelt out its new vision in an unprecedented clarity. The meeting was also open to any non-Oromo Ethiopians for the first time.
According to the press release, the OLF National Council has examined the struggle of the Oromo people, the political program of the front, the prevailing conditions that the Ethiopian people suffer under the dictatorship of Meles Zenewi and the necessity of working with all democratic forces in Ethiopian to end the untold misery of Ethiopians under the tyrannical regime.
“The OLF National Council also focused on the timely demand of working with other democratic forces in forming the new Ethiopia that will guarantee and protect the fundamental rights of all peoples in Ethiopia. The new social contract will and should be based on the free will and consent of all peoples in Ethiopia. The previous style that claims “I know for you” should be abolished and replaced with a new vision that is based on peoples’ consent and free will,” the release stated.
The historic statement further noted that OLF would struggle not only for the Oromo people but also the people of Ethiopia suffering under the tyranny and oppression of the TPLF regime. “To fulfill this vision and play crucial roles, not only for the Oromo people, but for all Ethiopian people, the OLF National Council pursuant to the power vested to it by the OLF National Congress effectively amended the OLF political program today, January 1, 2012,” the front said.
The release underscored the fact that the revised OLF political program will “accept the new federal democratic republic of Ethiopia that will work for the betterment of all of its citizens, neighboring countries and international communities.” It also said that the OLF would honor and respect the decisions of the Ethiopian people would make exercising their will under the new federal republic of Ethiopia.
OLF also urged all democratic forces to work in tandem to make Ethiopia a common home for all its people. It also called on the international community to desist from supporting the tyrannical regime of Meles Zenawi that is “engaged in terrorizing the Ethiopian people, selling the precious resources of the country to the highest bidders, and the government that does not respect the principles of democracy, human rights and rule of law.”
In an interview with ESAT Radio, Dr. Nuro Dedefo, OLF Executive Committee member, has explained that the front has charted out a new vision based on the reality on the ground. He said the new vision of the OLF aspires to liberate the Ethiopian people from the brutal minority rule of the TPLF and establish a new democratic Ethiopia based on the free will of the people to live, work and set up a common country for all. He pointed out that previously OLF used to advocate for the establishment of an Oromo state. As per its new vision, OLF now aspires to establish one country with other Ethiopians, he explained.
Dr. Nuro also underscored that OLF rejects the bogus federal arrangement that has imposed the hegemony of the TPLF on the rest of Ethiopia. According to Dr. Nuro, the OLF wants a real and genuine federal system which clearly shows that OLF broken with the past and embraced Ethiopian unity. “In order to change the racist minority rule of the TPLF and form a new Ethiopia that will be free from absence of the rule of law and rampant abuse of citizens… OLF is ready to work with all Ethiopian democratic forces,” he declared.
He noted that TPLF’s so-called federal arrangement has been designed to divide and rule the people of Ethiopia and impose its hegemony using its servile puppets and messengers. Dr. Nuro has underlined that that OLF’s new vision will put an end to TPLF’s propaganda against OLF, which it tried to present as a secessionist force. “That will put the scheme in the coffin once and for all,” he said.
The OLF official also called upon fellow Ethiopians to work with the OLF in a spirit of trust in order to establish the new Ethiopia, where democracy, justice, respect for human rights and rule of law will be the founding values.
Dr. Nuro told ESAT that the meeting, which was also open for non-Oromo Ethiopians, was exciting to so many Ethiopians that have already endorsed OLF’s new vision that it adopted to end dictatorship, suffering and lawlessness in Ethiopia once and for all in collaboration with any democratic forces.

This OLF new visionary strategy seems exactly the same as that of the Arab Spring peoples
revolt revolutions which surprisingly call the shots nowdays in the World order systems.
Let's see how this plays along down the road.
Cheers.
The Somalia freedom fighters might need new visionary moves like the OLF as well.
Will the ONLF also act like the OLF?…Looks like the Arab Spring Revolt Revolutions are spilling
over to other freedom fighters against dictatorship rulers all over the World.
Cheers.
The end of OLF is also the end of ONLF and their dreadlocks. ADDIS ADDISSSSS I want to be the first one to open a saloon in Jigjiga…I would be like Warren Buffet of the hair dressing world. I got my maqaas (scissor) and Sakiin (blade)——-cutting the era of terrorism and dreadlocks. Those Cagdheers dont think because no oxygen is reaching their brains (if they have any) due to the dreadlocks.
what a good idea, i always believe that oromo shoudnt separate from ethiopia. ethiopian led by oromo
it will definitely benefits somalia, eritrea & ogadenia, no more war in the Horn, ogaden can easily be recapture with out bloodshed.
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!
PuntlandGeezer, you are the biggest nacaas on this site .. Matter of fact you are the biggest nacaas on the whole world wide web
puntlandgeezer keep dreaming fool. Youll get your ogadenia in your sleep.
OLF has realized it is a dead organization without the support of the people. So its decided to go with the flow and accept Ethiopia as the nation of Oromos. Good decision. Of course the somaliweyners and the eritreans will be angry and frustrated about this. Kayse yes i want to open a business too. Jijiga is a great location, the new fancy Jijiga International Airport will be finished in 2013. Harar beer production has doubled after signing huge contracts with heineken and, Gojam south amhara chick peas production got a huge sponsor, PEPSI. This is the time to go to Ethiopia and invest. Come one come all. Somalilanders, you are our neighbours and friends. Go Ethiopia.
I hope this move will work for all OLF supporters. Without all the Oromo support, this will go no where.
For long the ONLF Rastafarians have misled their people and launch a campaign of terror, like the OLF no one supports the ONLF except few subclans among the Ogaden. This will soon surface and my up coming article will reveal the truth.
I have just went to the Somali Regional State and the place is becoming like Somalia, a failed state because of Abdi Mohamud Omar, the current leader. If Addis Ababa doesn't intervene I am afraid the chaos in Somalia will reach Ethiopia's heartland cities…Omar is ONLF as much as its current exiled leader.
We have to stop them for the interest of the region and our people in the Horn, the family of the Cushetic deserves a lasting peace. The peace spoilers are those that hide behind Greater Somalia agenda but with other motives and the Shaebias (supporters of Isaias).
One of the reason OLF decided to end its violent campaign is because Afwerki can no longer fund them since he collected more sanctions than Iran..also the war in Somalia (al shabab) is coming to a quick end thanks to brave soldiers from Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi and Kenya.
But even after the end of OLF, al shabab and ONLF, Somalia and Eritrea will still possess dangers to Ethiopia, Kenya and Somaliland. So its best the three form some military union and keep the region stable so investment can flow in and drought, starvation, conflict and hate can be buried forever.
Somaliland and Ethiopia need to sign a new treaty which involves Somaliland managing the Haud while Somaliland ensures there is never a union threat to Ethiopia from Somalia and the dreadlocks.
@Ethio Jegna
Habesha delusional dreams iz to colonize Somalis & to reduce our country somalia into clan enclaves and in shambles, but trust me that will never happen, the british orphans in hargeisa can cry as much as they lyk, if they don't like somalia, you take them with you.
regarding on ogadenia, we rather accept ogaden as an independent country then be part of raw meat, aids infested habesha.
Dear Somalilandpress, the title of the news goes like this:
Ethiopia: OLF drops secession, embraces Ethiopian unity.
http://nazret.com/blog/index.php/2012/01/02/ethio…
Will Somaliland drop the secession and embrace Somali Unity?
what dreams? What deliusion? What sillines? Somaliland forever and ever will never be like a none country like Somalia no matter the hate?
@Warsame
There's a difference. Somaliland is a Sovereign State with a dejure post history and not a
secession. Somaliland is also not a freedom fighting force struggle at this stage. It;s a functioning Govt. You just can't compare Somaliland and OLF or ONLF. In the first instance there's no easily achievable Somali unity.I just can't reason with your thinking mentality.
Cheers.
Somalilanders, do not dignify anything this low life, Ciyaal gudaaf, glue sniffing, from Xamar Jajab, call himself Puntlandgeezer! Ignore him completely and just give the thumb down.
The end of OLF will also mark the end of ONLF and Eritrean dictator Isaias Afwerki. This shows that peace lovers will always prevail and evil will come to an end.
Somaliland is not secessionist Warsame thats something terrorists like ONLF and others dream of. Everyone is aware of the history of the region, there was never a thing called "Somalia" before July 1960 and that little title was created by Somaliland who decided it was not for her. It is no different to the temporary creation of Egypt-Sudan union (Anglo-Egypt-Sudan). Somaliland withdraw union with Somalia after it discovered it shared nothing with those people.
The languages are similar but different, someone from Somaliland can hardly understand someone from Bay, Bakol or southern Somalia, its the same as Gurgura people in Ethiopia. As for religion southern Somalis follow extreme version of Islam known as Wahabism while in Somaliland its Qadariyah.
Qadariyah (or Qadariya), in Islam, are adherents of the doctrine of free will. The word Qadar is derived from qadr (power or rights).
Qadariya was one of the earliest philosophical schools of thought in Islam. The doctrine espoused notions of rationalism and contained elements of Greek philosophy. Qadaris maintain that Allah gave man free will, without which one cannot be fully accountable for one's actions.
In central Somalia they follow the Saalihiya order, it was founded by the mystic Sheikh Mohammed Salah of Sudan, followed by Sayid Abdullah Hassan or the Mad Mullah. Its as extreme as wahabism. The Mad Mullah tried to convert Ethiopian christians and Somalia Qadriyahs (Somalilanders) but failed so he constantly called them "infidels" because they refused his extreme version of Islam.
So the argument that Somalis share common language, religion and culture is all imaginary.
Oh my God !! You are stretching the facts a bit too far.
Somalilanders are Qadriyans thats why they believe everyone has the free will to decide whatever religion they worship or follow. Somalilanders are laid back and believe Ethiopia is no threat to Islam or Muslims after all its home to more Muslims than Somaliland, Djibouti and Somalia combined.
Without Ethiopia Islam would not be where it is today, after all it sheltered the early followers of Islam who fled persecution in Makkah. Ethiopia has more mosques than Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somaliland combined.
Ethiopia is the land of tolerance. I have lived in Diredawa after fleeing from Somalia because I happened to be an Isaaq and the Somalis wanted me dead. I lived in Diredawa with freedom, protection, hospitality, went to school, played with the local kids, was treated no different. The locals speak Somali, Amharic and Afan Oromo. We spoke all three as we wanted.
When it was Ethiopian Christian festivals we were given money by local shops, when it was Eid, the same, we (Christian and Muslim) kids collected the money and bought toys. It was the best time.
I want Ethiopians to know the ordinary Somalis do not hate you its just few elements from central and southern Somalia but they are slowly disappearing because hate can only take you so far.
Ethiopia is blessed because it sheltered the first Muslim Companions or aṣ-Ṣaḥāba and nothing can harm this country thats why it was not colonized nor divided and it will never be, it has the blessing (dua) of the Muslim prophet and aṣ-Ṣaḥāba.
Ethiopia is no place for Muslim minority either. About 55 per cent of Ethiopia’s parliament is Muslim and representatives from the country’s Islamic community insist they are at least 50 per cent of the population.
No doubt the Solomonic dynasty in 1270 destroyed Muslim-Christian relations in the region but with their end (Haile Selassie was its last Emperor), today we have new hope to co-exist again because much of that relationship was disrupted by Western forces.
But Joe, I was led to believe that the Qadariyah and Saalihiyah orders were almost identical derived
from after the Prophet Mohammed and his companions. Abdulqadir Jilaani is one Good scholar of the
order of Alqadariyah. For Saalihiyah… goes to roots of Al-Ahmadiyah Doctrine. I Don't know who's and what's these times and age but in the Mud Mullah times, The Isaaqs were Saalihiyah Al-Ahmadiyah and the Darood's were AL-Qadariyah. Somebody help me out here.
Cheers.
Kayse Bhai..This Arab Spring Revolt Revolutions are surprisingly making the entire World crazy.
be cautious about your analysis. Notwithstanding the special friendship bond between Somaliland and
Ethiopia Govts. Also, it would be in the interests of all Igad/E.A. to have peace. Therefore, somehow,
am not comfortable that your strategies are good solutions. Let's see how the OLF new strategy
plays down the road and whether that will bring about major political changes to the current standards
which's in line with your thinking powerhouse.
Cheers.
I shall add one more point for your Mr. Joe: The artificial enmity between the two brotherly people created by Wahabis [as you said] is over and will not return. I would like to see taking a train from Hargeisa and going to Addis Ababa without fear, and I would like to see the Horn of Africa flourish.
All those so-called freedom fighters must cease and think of the future and peace that will bring us all those who reside the area. I welcome that the peace treaty signed by OLF with Ethiopia, OLNF must follow suit, while given us [The Reserve Area Population] our piece of the cake.
All you have heard and are propagating is pipe dream. Kemal Galtu (not Gelchu) leads only himself and a few Wayane messengers like him. The real OLF is alive and kicking and it is in the minds and hearts of Oromos all over the world. Mark my words, the Habesha celebrating today will soon wish that this day never existed. Again mark my words and you will all be forced to retract your voices of jubliation.
Hillu illyy get real. Its been 40 years youve been claiming the same thing over and over that oromia this, habesha that blah blah blah. Your olf is a dead skeleton. In 40 years never once has the OLF controlled a town or even a neighbourhood without Eprdf help. After olf left eprdf they were about as harmful as a pack of goats. Your olf is only good at talking and talking thats it. When was the last time the olf launched attack on Ethiopian army? I think it was 1995? All those old losers are just gaining grey hairs in Asmara.
Somalilanders listen to mr Joe. When siad barre was persecuting your people, Ethiopians even in our time of starvation and war welcomed your people into our country in Dire Dawa Addis Moyale everywhere. There isnt a single Somali who was mistreated by us. We respect all religions and as Mr Joe added, the Koran speaks of our good will towards muslims.
Now tell me, what have Saudi yemen done for you? Fellow muslim? Yes. But they beat, attack rob our refugees Ethiopian or Somali. They will deport your mothers and childrens back to warzones. They are cruel.
Remember we are your true friends.
Hi Gambella Man,
Nous verrons. We shall see in due time who is getting real and who is not. Kemal Galtu will be remembered only for the fifth columnist that he is a year from from now and all those currently intoxicated with irrational exuberance over the purported change in OLF political program will be forced to shut their dirty mouths and you will be among them.
But just out of curiosity, if OLF is so weak as you say it is, why are you so eager to have it on your side? I suppose such question is to difficult for your pea-sized brain to figure, yeayh?
Hi All
Please stop using the term Ogadenia. There is no such territory. Instead you should all be using The Somalil Territory of Ethiopia. It is not only Ogaden clan that inhabit in that terrotory. All other Somali clans are also there. So, stop calling it Ogadenia.
I am going to Ethiopia and believe it or not I am looking forward to going there than I am going to Djibouti aka French Camp or Mogadishu (I respect Xamar Cadey but I hate the warlords, I do wish I had mansion near Jazeera beach but its full of criminals).
Ethiopia is booming and I am investing in the future, I don't want to die like those Rastafarians for nothing. They hiding in bushes and living with spiders and rats. There is no water, roads, telephone, civilization there, I just got back from there and I was shocked how miserable it is (the places they hiding).
I am interested in the agriculture sector and electronics. Ethiopia needs Somali entrepreneurs and likewise Ethiopians shouldnt feel threatened. We all know Somalis are better at business than Ethiopians but their tribalism, division and rebellion attitude and culture puts them behind. I'm sure we all agree on that.
The most successful Ethiopian business is the Ethiopian Airline and it is one of the most profitable airline in the world not only in Africa. They have a fleet of 42 passenger airlines plus 31 on orders…furthermore 6 freighters and 4 on order…making it one of the biggest airlines in the world. The little Carrier of Djibouti has only 1 mohahahahaha and they call themselves a country.
Next is probably Sunshine Construction (Construction and real estate), Nejat International (coffee), Guna Corporation (coffee)
I also predict companies involved in exporting of flowers might over take the traditional coffee exporters like Nejat Int. because coffee rate is low while there is high demand for flowers and the margin on flowers is much much higher than coffee beans…Ethiopia will replace Kenya as the largest flower exporter…Ethiopia will become Valentine's land. Good for all the romantic girls including Somali girls.
I will replace qat with flowers, Ethiopian farmers dont need to feel threatened, instead of qat now grow flowers for us, the girls in Somaliland and the Horn of Africa as whole are becoming flower-materialistic…but instead of Valentine's day in Somaliland and Haud we will have Bodhaari Day.
Somaliland and the Haud will soon ban Qat and as a result we give the Ethiopian farmers an early warning to replace their plantations before its too late.
If Ethiopia exports any more qat to the mention places we will consider this a clear violation against our will and sovereignty and thus will damage our relations.
Somaliland might seem small (in terms of population) but we have the greatest influence on the rest of the Somali family. If we call for unity they will unify in days, if we call for semi-autonomous regions they all follow suit, if we make rebels, they do the same….thus the reason why they not united right now is because its not in our interest, but we can easily unify them if we choose.
QAT NO. Flowers/fruits YES. Somaliland's future policy. Odayal (elders) views NO. Young generation YES.
Gambela Man
Dire Dawa is Somali town. Don;t be fooled by the fake colonial boundaries.
It is not new to us Somalis you guys Amharas and Tigrays, want to keep the Oromo and Somali territories under christian minority rule and dismember the muslim state Somalia to make sure they don;t get support. But remember, the times are different. The question is can you keep Ethiopia together in the next 20 years?
Warsame
Dire Dawa, Jijiga, Gode, Werder, Harar, Dheghabour, Qorahe….all 100% Ethiopian.
This is not colonial borders, like the ones that drew up Somalia and Somaliland. The people in these regions heroically stood up to fight the italian invader back in 1935 and fought beside Ethiopia. No colonial border can draw that. They have chosen to be Ethiopian, and no internet warrior can change that. If your still going to boil and rage because of this, well you have a problem. 3 million Somalis starving the most of the country still run by 15 th century child rapists in alshabab. Before you talk about my house look at your own.
Warsame, Your comments about amharas and tigrayans trying to put down muslim Ethiopians shows that you are ignorant and have been brainwashed by siad barre big time. Lets see what will happen if a christian tries to read a Bible in Mokdisho. Theyll drag him through the streets.
In Ethiopia every major city has mosques, centers of worship, islamic community meetings. Muslims worship freely. In Addis Ababa you can hear the Mosque at Mercato reading prayers all around. The first mosque ever built is in Wukro Tigray.
And muslims are very present in leadership. The state presidents of Harar, Somali kilil, Afar state, are all muslims. The biggest businessman and construction partner owner of largest ciment factory of Ethiopia is Sheikh Al Amoudi. The chief General is General Samora Younis (muslim) and Army minister of defense is Siraj Fergessa who is a muslim and a minority ethnic Silite. There are muslims in the high courts, the education ministry and the Ethiopian national football team. We Ethiopians are tolerant kind open
Hearted people.
The statement that Ethiopia is abusive and oppressive to muslims is just laughable and stupid. One has to come to Ethiopia and see for themselves what this land of opportunity is truly like.
Every body has a controversial statement to contribute. BTW guys we know that in the Horn
and Surrounding countries, peace is up in the sky and things are bad times. We are all Africans
irrespective of our Religious Ideological misunderstanding defferences..Let's hope the African leaders
would learn to alleivate the sufferings of the peoples for the general common good in 2012. Happy new year.
Cheers.
Gear Keyse,
It is good to respect Xamar Cadeey. I also think the future business center in Horn of Africa is Xamar Cadeey, not Adis Ababa or Nairobi.
Think after AMISOM, US, SHABAAB, TFG and CLAN B.S. and plan your business adventure now.
ethiopian is ethiopian.our problem is economic.religion is indiuvieul.ever person have right worship his own desire.if somalians are ruin in religion or clan issue.it is not ethiopian problem.the conflict in somalian must be solved by somalian citizens.oromo, ahmara, tigray, gurage and so more are ethiopian.we are not animals or insane.we saw that sequence of war.we fight and nothing we gain.our solution is economic.our brother oromon are well to give us hand to support ethiopian economic and make ethiopian middle income country.the issue of somalian is the problem of somalian.thank you brother and sisters.
I like your comment thank you.
Cheers
Any individual or group can declare a state ONLY on paper without actually controlling an inch of a land just like recent on paper Awdal State. If this group now meeting in Telex declare a Darwish or any other so-called state, so be it, as long as they do not interfere, with the security of Somaliland or its international borders.
I thought I was at "Ethiopialandpress.com" site with all these pro-Amhara, pro-Tigrey sentiments and exuberance emanating from the usual suspects, regular bench warmers and mouthpieces for Habashis.
One person with an unmistakably Christian name went so far as to be virtually baptized online. Spelling out the "virtues" of Christianity and how he was treated well when he went to Dira Dawa to escape Barre's ruthless clampdown on all Somalis. I got news for you, the people that actually welcomed you in Diradawa were not the Dergue supporters or Christians but Muslims of all persuasions, be it Somalis, Oromos, Afars, Hariris, Gurgurs, etc.
On a different post I mentioned the economic apartheid system in Ethio. and I standby my earlier comment. if you think Ethio. regions are developing equally, then I have got a bridge to sell you. The so called development is weighted toward Christian dominated regions of Ethio. You can't obfuscate the facts. You are entitled to your opinion but not the facts. If you want to know how Christian Ethio. treated Muslims just go back to less than 120 years ago and read about Menelik and Ras Makonen, governor of Harar. The mistreatment, heavy-handedness and persecution of Ethio. Muslims by these butchers of Muslims is heartbreaking. Similar tactic, though no less lethal or effective, is being carried out in the 21st century by the Addis-run government against millions of people.
The vast majority of Ethio. citizens want to manage their day to day lives and govern themselves without Addis interfering. Anything short of that is non-negotiable-really it is a simple calculus.
