Nimco: A story of Change

April 29, 2010   ·   9 Comments

As graduate from the high school, my mother told me that she is not able to support my education. From that day on, I was thinking where I was heading in my life. The emotions I felt every day depended on how things in and around me including the state of my mine, my environment, and my choices in life were going. Joy, hope and happiness were out of question and my life is characterized by hopelessness.

I was faced with misery, pain, and some times despair. What happens, now I remember the feelings of excitement as I walked through the front gates of the university for the first time and have the ability to continue my dream of an education with the support of Lucy University College and Amina Suleiman. Nimco recalls:

What I know from life is that days are different like human beings. Life is said to be the best teacher and every day is lesson in the class room of life. My mother told us that there are lots of dimensional elements of living which are confronted you in the ultimate journey which we call life. Some times you think that you have a depressing future and lose your hope, your living conditions passing on messages to you on what kind of person you should be and how you should behave in your society.

Because of been born in a poor family did not divest me to educate my self. Nimco & her family are among thousands of internal displaced people who live at Sheikh Nour IDP camp in Hargeisa. She is brilliant student who achieve to end her four years secondary school education after an each day 5 kilometers walk from her home. Nimco completed 26 Jun secondary school in last year. According her grade, she succeeds to be the first female student of highest in marks in whole Somaliland Secondary Schools education.

Today me my family are living full hope and happiness, and my main concern is making a decent living and studying Faculty of Law at the University. Thanks to the vice president of Lucy University, Mohamed Abdillahi, who gives me the opportunity of continuing my education and inspiring the same people like me. Mohamed is helper, a role model to all Somali Land society, very optimistic social worker who is really making a change in the community. He believes that any positive change in society can be done through social work.

Education is what every body strives for. How ever, you should always be grateful to and proud of those who helped you and paved the way to your success. Special thanks to Sister Amina Suleiman who works with Mamalink.org based at Sheffield in the UK and assisting the needy students and improve their lives for better. Once again you set the tone for my life by helping me to make sure that I have all the requirements for a successful education.

In fact, this observable story of change encouraged Amina Suleiman to establish Somaliland Education Trust. SET aims to sponsor talented and gifted young people in Somaliland who can’t afford to pay for their higher education fees. SET will raise funds through donations from the members of Somaliland communities world wide. We trust that you will welcome our efforts and be kind enough to support. You Somali Landers in and out, are you ready caring for orphans, blind and those with special needs through your pocket. We have to join our efforts to support students and help for those who are not able to pay the fee of Primary Schools, Secondary Schools or even Universities.

Last but not least, as Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “By Him whose hand my soul is, Allah does not bestow His Mercy except on merciful one”
