Somaliland President in China for trade talks (August 2011, Somalilandpress)

HARGEISA — The General Secretary of Somaliland’s ruling Kulmiye party left the country on Friday for the People’s Republic of China where he is scheduled to attend a series of meetings lined up with the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).

In a statement to the press signed by the party’s chairman, Mr. Hassan Saeed Yusuf, the General Secretary of Kulmiye, Mr. Muse Bihi Abdi was leading a three-member delegation to Beijing.

It added the team left for China at the invitation of Chinese ruling Communist Party and are expected to discuss the establishment of formal relations between Somaliland and the CPC.

The visit is also said to promote mutual understanding and trade ties between the two countries. “The two sides will hold bilateral trade and cooperation between the two parties and friendship between the people’s of the two countries,” the statement said.

The press release concluded by saying the three delegates will meet with leading Chinese corporates and entrepreneurs. They said the expansion of the port of Berbera will be the main topic.

In August, Hargeisa said it was signing a trilateral trade deal with China and neighboring Ethiopia. The announcement came after Hong Kong-based PetroTrans Company Ltd signed a deal with the Ethiopian Government to purchase gas and oil over a 25 year period. The Chinese company said it was investing close to $4 billion in developing oil and gas reserves in blocks 3 and 4, 11 and 15, 12 and 16, and 17 and 20 in the Ogaden region. It added it was building a pipeline to Somaliland’s Red sea port of Berbera for export.

Berbera port sits on a strategic location at the mouth of the Red Sea and at the center of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Hargeisa is looking for wealthy Chinese investors to help expand the deep-water port.

The current delegation include Mr. Muse Bihi Abdi, the General Secretary of Kulmiye, Mr. Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, Party Spokesman and Mr. Ahmed Abdi Hussein, Central Committee member. They are expected remain in the Asian country for a week-long visit.

You cannot put all your eggs in one basket. China is posing a real economic threat to the west and our giverments new relationship with China will have impact on our current relationship with the West. China is not a new country, they have been watching us for over 20 years where the west has bee supporting us finically and plotically. China has already put their money where their mouth is. They spent millions to Aftica,s energy in order to exploit thier natural resources. The west is not trying to stop the in accessing to African resources by building AFRocom. So my advice would be that our tiny government needs to play it’s cards right.

The West you speak of has had 20 long years to court us, it hasnt't. If somaliland does engage China on economic it should attract the West to growing confidence in seeking other alternatives in viable economic partners. This is the right way in gaining interest from Western powers and their engagement. So do not be easily dissatisfied by our governments efforts.

I welcome this move by the Kulmiye party to explore alternative options. I as everyone knows by one is one for Somaliland-China relationship. Unlike the aging and declining West, the Chinese are all about business; they don't care if your recognized or not, your communist or democratic, black or white.

The West will hide behind the fake democracy hide and will only do business with white boys.

Everything in Somaliland is imported from China and I hope after the port expansion and pipeline we can talk about fair trade. Somaliland should have access to China's manufacturing powerhouse, we should get cheap prices for motor vehicles including construction trucks, cargo trucks, forklifts, cranes, bulldozers, tractors, buses; all to help us drive our port, transport, cargo and construction industry.

This is very vital for Somaliland's future. If we can drive the construction industry, the country will attract the large diaspora back into their country. They will come back both with money, experience and professional skills.

I am for the Somaliland – Hanland relations.

Awdal Boy, We don't need to worry about the west or how it will impact on our relationship. We are not joined on the hip. Somaliland is open to have relations with all countries whether it is business, investment, or bilateral relations because China is an emerging superpower that has lot of potentials. We don't have to limit ourselves to have relations with some and not others. We should be open-minded, but careful about pitfalls, entrapment, and sheddy deals when doing business with any country.

China needs resource, and the resources they need is in Somalia and Ogadenia. Therefore, I don't see anything you offering here, execept a port being builted by Somali taxes and borrowing Somali passports.

Gobaad don't pay too much attention to the sons of mooryaans and faagesh, they just don't have anything happening for them since their parents are in Dadaab refugee camp starving like the Ethiopians in the 70s.

We are feeding their kids and they still hate us because they cant make peace amongst themselves. They bunch of hyenas without a matriarch.

What you expect from them. They were born in a war, raised with guns and blood. They want to bring the same negativity, illness, hatred and suffering to us. We left them 20 years ago and have since prospered in our own ways.

Throw those southern hyenas a bone…wahahawahaha (can you hear the mooryaan and fageesh hyenas laughing?)

Amal and Kayse, I know I shouldn't give a heed to those low-lives who are trying hard to ruffle some feathers, annoying Somalilanders. But sometimes, I wonder are these people real when they are unleashing insults and venomous comments against Somalilanders? And why, don't they have a good look at themselves in the mirrow before they open their mouth? And why, do they have to visit Somaliland websites anyways, if they hate us that much?

You can only boil down one situation towards the steps Somaliland should take towards China or America..for example, America's result on Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, And sactions on Iran..America is a evil nation that will push it's powers for the interst of their own nation and not for a foreign nation..When has China invaded another nation or critisized a nation based on their religious spectrum..IF it's business you seek than China is more of a important ally..Silanyo and future ruling Somaliland Parties should invest stronger ties with China because they will always veto any irrational bill passed in the united nation to invade a country under a pretext of "weapons of mass destructions."..cheers!

I do not care whether the cat is black or white as long it catches the mice(Ding Shu Ping expresindent of China). It is a good move to explore all the avenues. Look around you what China is doing for Ethiopia. Developing their hydro electric power and transportation to name a few.
The west has draged its feet to recognise us, the Africans are not capable of delivering anything. It is time to go east. Let us explore more eastern countries including China, India. Malaysia, Indonesia. When we are done with east lt us go to south America like Argentine, Brazil, Chile and the sky is the limit. Do be short sighted expand your horizon.
Finaly let us even offer China a naval base in Somaliland and since they are in the security council they will promote our cause.
