MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) – Somali-born rapper K’naan brought his waving flag back home Sunday, promising to help his countrymen as they struggle with a devastating famine that has killed tens of thousands of children.

The rapper, who left Somalia as a child more than two decades ago to settle in Canada, made a brief visit to Mogadishu on Sunday. He was mobbed by famine refugees who tried to shake his hand or hug him as he toured Mogadishu’s Banadir Hospital and met with malnourished children.

“I came to Somalia to see the situation here and give any donation I have to the people and anything else available,” he said, speaking in Somali. “I will do all I can to help my people in Somalia.”

He did not perform his hit song “Wavin’ Flag,” which tells of the difficulties he faced growing up in the lawless, impoverished Horn of Africa nation. A version of that song was used for a Coca-Cola campaign when South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup.

The United Nations says more than 3.2 million Somalis need food aid. The US says 29,000 Somali children under age 5 have died.

The UN says tens of thousands of people already have died in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti and has warned that the famine hasn’t peaked. More than 12 million people in the region need food aid, according to the UN Somalia has been hit hardest because of a confluence of conflict and climate change.

Decades of violence in Somalia has left population vulnerable to the vagaries of weather changes. Islamist insurgents are also attempting to overthrow Somalia’s weak UN-backed government. The most dangerous among the groups is the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabab militant group, which has barred aid agencies from operating in the territories it controls in southern Somalia.

The southern parts of Somalia, which are mainly under the control of Al-Shabab extremists, have been worst affected because of the group’s refusal to allow in key humanitarian groups including the World Food Program, the world’s major aid provider.

For what he went there? He should have done better than that, and raise funds by making some theatrical fund raising events from where he came from. This is not sight seeing place, but disastrous in very big magnitude. The entire world now knows what is happening in Somalia, and his visit will not change that. He should have done what musicians have done for Ethiopia in 1980s, but not plain visit.

I totally agree, Boqoljireh. He could have mobilized western musicians such as Bob geldoff and Bono, a great humanitarian, singer, and song writer to influence and bring on board lots of musicians who are willing to contribute to form a Live Aid Bank. Just Kaynaan showing up empty handed would not make any difference.

K'nan is a self-promoting D list celebrity who only uses his Somali heritage for the benefit of reviving his diminishing statues in the music world. There is very little chance of K’nan doing anything to help the people of Somalia. He will probably do few interviews about his trip to Somalia while at the same time promoting his new album.

We as a Somalis have to stop hating only when we love each other as brothers and systers. And follow the right path of justice shall true peace come 2 Somalia (of all tribes ) Put down the gun and start loving insteed my brother. I really wonder how criminals can sleep good at nights knowing they have killed and caused suffering for so many.

K'naan is really good and unique talented singer, and a proud Somali unlike some wannabes in America with earings, chains and without a talent. It must be heart breaking to go back to his homeland in such state.

However, I don't want to criticize him at all but I seriously agree with boqoljire he could have done so much with MUSIC and launch a huge campaign and mobilize western musicians. But lets not forget we don't know his situation and at least he visited to see them. And I'm sure he gave so much money after seeing all that
