On July 15, in response to the serious famine in the “Horn of Africa”, including Somalia, the Government of Japan has decided to extend emergency grant aid of 5 million dollarsw for food assistance through the World Food Programme (WFP) to this region.
The assistance is a response to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s call, on July 12, for assistance for the “Horn of Africa”. The emergency assistance comes in addition to approximately $45 million package for Somalia and $13 million for refugees programme in Kenya which were disbursed in this year. The package aims at alleviating the devastated situation Somalis face by providing a range of assistance through multilateral channels, such as WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, IOM, UNHABITAT, IFRC, ICRC.
