Turkey begins to train Somali police units

ISTANBUL — Turkey has officially began training the first 60 cadets for the Somali national police force in Istanbul as part of its pledges to help rebuild Somali institutions.

Turkish officials and embassy staff from Somalia’s embassy in Ankara including general-secretary Abdukadir Mohamed Nor witnessed the launch of the program on Tuesday.

The 60 cadets include 5 women who will train along side their countrymen and other Turkish police units.

The ceremony, themed ‘Course in plant protection, protecting against terrorism’ was held in an academy just outside of Istanbul.

As part of her efforts to end the lawlessness, Turkey said it will train the police and military forces for the war-ravaged nation. They also offered to equip them with Turkish and foreign equipment.

Along with the police and massive reconstruction, Turkey is also training Somali students and medical professionals. Its projects are expected to contribute to Somalia at a level unseen since the Soviet Union in 1970s and 1980s.

The Somali public has welcomed the Turkish initiatives and are asking the Turkish government where have they being all these years.

This is fantastic news for Somalia and the region. Somalia is recovering and in its path to recovery, it will remember those who were there for her.

Thank You Turkey and Turkish people.

    • Xamaraawi says:

Omarani don't you think that the Turkish should also train S/land forces.

      • Omarani says:

Turkey should train police forces in Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland because we cant have professional unit in one end of the country while the other falls apart then we back to square one. Educated Somalis are good for all Somalis.

If we have only the south then the south is soon going to think they have rights to control the other regions and the other regions will respond with their militia and like Siad bare we will have the south fleeing to Kenya again.

The way to end war is to distribute funds, resources and skills.

        We can't become like Mexico.

        • khaatumo citizen says:

those police forces are not only from Mugadishu but all regions cross the country.

personaly i want mogadishu to become like before even though we suferred a lot in mogadishu during the H@w1ya uprising lol. i always called uprising because it was just that uprising no plan to govern the country no plan for security in the capital. they could not believe they will keep the capital for long so they burnied and destroyed everything the somali airline the electricity somali telecom somali air defence everything. so now the turkish have to do like we just got independence and as a new country. anyway my father have lost everything he worked for in mogadishu so all i will do is rebuild our house in the capital and invest all my money in kismayo.

  3. Kayse says:

I think Somalia has great chance to be a great nation. Personally I am going to move all my relatives, whoever wants to move, to Mogadishu while we still keep our homes in Hargeisa. Right now there is nothing in Hargeisa, every shiinbiir is waiting for a magic-bullet called ixtiiraaf. I rather take matters to my own hands and those of my immediate family.

Good luck to them and their little isolation.

      • Kayse says:

I think the majority of them are southern Somalis going back but trust me this will hurt Hargeisa. Personally, I southerners renting from me so if they go back, it will be difficult to find people for my 8 bed room house in Hargeisa. They advised me not to rent to people with kids so thats already like 70% of the population.

I had four different folks renting two rooms each and I believe two have already went back to Mogadishu.

My family was renting more than 5 houses to Xamarawis and that money was going to supporting relatives back home so…now it will be hard to find people in Hargeisa.

The good thing is that Hargeisa and Mogadishu folks have became good friends and will visit each others.

Stability in Mogadishu will hurt Nairobi more than anything.

        • ali says:

mogadishu will always be good business hub put my opponion The goverment should not sit There. need new small city neutral which The goverment operates from, not even north somalia wants That, put rest of somalis interested to see That new city people in jubbaland+Puntalnd and so forth.

somalis need to careful NOT but all Their eggs in one basket. distribution of resources should be spread equally, These cities will grow in Three fold next ten yesrs,mogadishu-hargiesa-bosaso-kismayu.

  4. Villa Somalia says:

What Do you mean Hawiye Uprising?
Don't be hater, all Somalis destroy Somalia and nobody is innocent.
Mogadishu welcomes all Somalis where ever they are.Home sweet home.I myself has a house in Mogadishu and as you know real state is hot now.Maybe a year or less i will be moving back after 23 years living in Usa.I am so exciting….

    • khaatumo citizen says:

and give Hawiyee a break they weren't only ones who destroyed somalia, every qabil did,

  5. Adam says:

I'm a police Officer here in the states and I am unimpressed by these Somali recruits. Some of these guys don't have their uniforms prepared properly. When you interact with citizens, your uniform and appearance needs to be spotless. People need to know they can take you seriously and that you are not a joke. Criminals also take notice like my instructor said "your always being sized up". Somali police officers need the proper equipment like Pistols instead of AK47 to carry. They need tasers in addition to their batons also pepper spray. non lethal means need to be emphasized in their training instead of lethal. In my training and at work, if i can taser someone I will do it. Somali cops need a lot of things people.

    • Kayse says:

Maybe you should go there and take a role. This is only the first training and first unit, you can't expected them to go from 21-years-militia-men to professional force in a day just because they are in Turkey.

They will need at least 6 months to rehabilitate them. Equipment will come no problem Somalia is not broke as they say but we a broke in disciplines.

  6. mudug says:

    villa somalia

dont get me wrong bro i dont hate H@wiya. i am just stating the facts. 1991 was not a coup where you depose a dictator and restore order. it was uprising where the even our neigbours tried to lynch us becouse we were d@rod the funny thing was we were not even the big guns d@r0d like m@reH the maj3rt33n and 0g@den. the h@awiya raised up and were in to ethnic cleansing. we had to claim being 1s@@q and d1r and what ever saved our lives but trust me that was the past and i already been to mogadishu numorous times and somalis will always be one no matter their history

    • ali dheere says:

Mogadhu will not become power house it use to be before,i was born and raised There. for number of reasons today in somalia They are some states which have functioning goverment, also jubbaland it’s coming up & i Think it will become in The future of The most prosperous state in somalia.why? because it has every Thing river-ocean farmland and next to east-africa business.

      • ali dheere says:
