Exiled Former Interior Minister of Siyad Bare regime will return to Somaliland

September 2, 2010   ·   32 Comments

HARGEISA (SomalilandPress)–A long time politician in Somalia, General Jama Mohamed Qalib is expected to return to Somaliland via Egal International Airport during the Eid festival. It was in 2003 when General Qalib landed in Berbera Airport after his return from Somali reconciliation conference that he was arrested on arrival. Mr. Qalib was held for several days before he was exiled to Djibouti after he told former President Egal that he would not renounce his support for Somali reunification.

General Qalib was the longest serving Interior Minister during Siyad Bare era which earned him the nick name “the Iron Minister”. The Minister and his former boss former President Siyad Bare disagreed on the role the General played the development of Somali National Movement (SNM) which at that time was fighting the government. Some believed General Qalib was giving top secrets to SNM because of his tribal lineage, however it was never proven. The General currently works for the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

SomalilandPress reporter Abdiqani Baynah in Hargeisa was able to confirm with Abdirahman Jama Mohamed the son of General Jama Qalib the rumors that his father is expected to arrive Somaliland next week. Mr. Abdirahm Jama Mohamed told SomalilandPress that his father is expected to arrive in Somaliland sometime next week after his father and Somaliland President Ahmed Siilaanyo where able to have a mutual agreement. Currently there is no official news from the government in this matter.
Political experts in Hargeisa are saying that General Qalib and Somaliland President Ahmed Siilaanyo have a close relationship that dates back to when Mr. Siilanyo was the chairman of SNM and the general was the Interior Minister.

Those Somalilnaders who lost loved ones as a result of torture by the security apparatus of Siyad Barre headed by this triator and collaborator, might think of opening his very heart and eat it alive. If this news item is valid, he is surely coming with an agenda of damaging Somaliland even more. We have every right to stop him by all means and as soon as possible.

We have our god given land with pleny of resources and wealth and time will show that you will come and beg us for support and development.

Jama Mohamed Qalib was the inside man for SNM in Siyad Barre Regime. This man was fighting from the inside and was more valuable to the SNM cause by staying with the Siyad Goverment and has passed important information over to the SNM. In a nutshell, Mr Qalib with an SNM spy, he was one of many SNM Heroes that need to be remembered and appreciated for their part in the ppl's liberation.. If he has repented and wishes to come back to his ppl we should welcome him with open arms.

Welcome home Honorable Jama Mohamed Qalib

Although Jama M. Qalib he was former interior minister and Somali Police Commander for many years he is Somalilander, who was dissatisfied with the then Somaliland regime. He played an important role in the SNM struggle to topple the fascist and the oppressive of Somalia. I believe he made a wrong political move when he openly opposed the government of Somaliland and later joined the Asmara group headed by Sheikh Sharif and others for personal reasons to advance his political goals. If he changed his conviction and stand in believing the concept of Somaliweyn and seeks pardon from the Somaliland government and wants to return to his home land and participates constructively in rebuilding Somaliland in any way he can , this development if it’s true is an encouraging and he ought to be congratulated . Let be bygones be bygones and welcome any Somalilander who wants to participate the rebuilding of his homeland. At this juncture we need every Somaliland politician, intellectual businessman and women who was against Somaliland and at this time realized that it’s high time to wholeheartedly support the existence of Somaliland. As such, Jama M. Qalib as a seasoned politician, senior police officer whose expertise in governance and security affairs is highly renowned in all Somali regions will be a beneficial in Somaliland. His prominence among his people and in Somaliland in general is positive development in bringing home whose Somalilanders who were dissatisfied with the way the country was governed in the past.

Jama Mohamed Qalib is no doubt and an intelligentual, whose his experiences and national security expertises are currently most needed in Somaliland. Jama, is of course, an iron articlate man, who always stick to his personal idiologies. There is no doubt, that Jama will never change or never give up his idea of Somalia federalism, but the question is, what can he do for Somaliland, if his beliefs are still in his mind. I would like Mr Jama to be part and parcel of a Somalilander, but should not hold any high profile position, once, he is not on same boat with his fellow Somalilanders anyway, however, he can live his country fairly and freely owing to his personal security.

Jaamac Yare will always stick to his pan-Somalism beliefs. As for those who claim he worked with the SNM, by the time of the liberation, Jaamac was out of the Barre regime, and spent most of his time at the American Club playing bridge and golf. Still, if he wants to come to his place of birth, then he has every right. There is not much he can contribute to Somaliland today because he is out of touch with the reality in the country. Perhaps, he is coming to retire, perhaps he wants to spend is waning days in Hargeisa. Whatever, the reason, Jaamac Yare's impending relocation to Somaliland is old news.

  12. Ahmed says:

I read Mr. Qalib's book, the cost of dictatorship, while i was stil in University. I found his book very informative and genuine attempt to explain, how somalia rottened from inside and the factors that influenced that process.

To my knowledge he is the only veteran ,Somalilander politician that wrote 400 pages book re, what happened 1955-1990,and when you read his book, you accept that the man has unique competence that we need desperately.

Secondly, our reconciliation process is still going on and we should open our borders to all those intellectuals that has been absent from our nation building. He is number one, security and police expert from Somaliland. He could hugely contribute to our fragile peace and security.

Finaly, He must abandon his pan-somali aspirations, if he intends to live in Somaliland. Because our flag stands for the peace and stability that our people worked for so hard.

The more we wait and see, the more the Silaanyo admin is starting to shape and look like a fqash camp.

Before it's too late, real Landers and Ethiopia have to rescue Somaliland again from yet another fqash stooges and their Islamists allies.

    • Kayse says:

I am certain if these sort of things continue very soon Silaanyo is going to get tumbled by real Landers and the Ethiopian army. Trust me.

We do not want anyone who is sympathetic to fqash people or leaders, organizations or regions.

Ethiopia already removed its little trading office in Hargeisa. It closed its doors.

Too many fqash ministers in the administration of silaanyo, he set free too many fqash and Islamists, now Jama Yare is coming, he is also trying to make peace deals with administrations like farole, pirates, sheikh atom and al shabab.

We are watching and if these things continue, the former SNM leader will become the enemy of SNM and Ethiopia.

Silaanyo was always fqash hiding behind SNM, under him more people died and no achievements. The SNM saw this and got rid off him, straight away they produced fruits with A. Tuur.

What a smart man, Silaanyo you have learnt the lesson from Mr Yousuf of.. what is called Buntland… Puntland or is it Buttland…..you did not invade or had a military support from Ethiopia, you did this by using a well established democratic process, approved, supported by the election observers of EU and US teams.

The title of this article is misleading. It's accurate that he did serve as interior minister in Siyad Barre;s government for long period of time; he also tenured as member of the SNM. His later role as SNM hero should have been emphasized more here because that was much nobler task that he took part of. I believe this man or others like should not be denied to come and live in their country as they wish. Same goes to Mr. bubaa, sifir and Kalun. They should be able to come and visit their country and relatives. I have to tip my hat to Pres. Silaanyo for transparency and understanding.

  21. Faris says:

I call this cherry picking because mr. Qhalib worked as interior minister in ex Somali regime, but so did everyone else including the junior NSS spy Former President of Somaliland and the current President of Somaliland also served as finance minister in siyad barre govt and so is faysal ali warabe, and Siyad Barre' former doctor Dr. Gaboose currently interior minister of Silanayo govt. Lets not be hypocrital here. Every somali served under Siyad barre govt the only question and all left as soon it became clear to them what siyad Barre regime was doing to isakh people.
