Ethiopia praises Somaliland polls

July 4, 2010   ·   34 Comments

ADDIS ABABA (Somalilandpress) — Ethiopia pledged support Sunday for Somaliland and praised the breakaway state’s presidential candidates for carrying out a peaceful transfer of power after polls last week.

“The government of Ethiopia pays tribute … to (outgoing) President Dahir Riyale Kahin for his high sense of obligation to the people of Somaliland … and to the leader of the winning party Ahmed Mohamud Silaanyo for his magnanimity and for his commitment,” a foreign ministry statement said.

“The people of Somaliland can always count on the full support of the government and people of Ethiopia as they continue to preserve their peace and stability and ensure the democratic process is protected,” it added.

Silaanyo won June 26 polls that were praised by observers for being transparent and peaceful despite threats of attacks from the Al-Qaeda-inspired Shebab operating in neighbouring Somalia.

The president-elect subsequently vowed to campaign “vigorously” for international recognition for his Horn of Africa republic.

The former British colony has close political and commercial ties with regional powerhouse Ethiopia, but Addis Ababa has so far declined to grant recognition and only maintains a trade office in Hargeisa.

Tacked on to Somalia when the latter gained independence from Italy in 1960, Somaliland has remained reasonably stable, spared the clan warfare that has dogged Somalia thanks to the domination of the Issaks.

It broke away from Somalia in 1991, after the overthrow of Siad Barre plunged the country into anarchy.

Silaanyo’s election marks the second democratic transfer of power in 19 years, which voters saw as a fresh opportunity to demonstrate their aspiring state’s democratic credentials.

The region has been spared much of the violence that has ravaged Somalia, where an Islamist insurgency is battling to overthrow the Western-backed government of President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

You have to be kidding me! why are they praising a form of system they cant comply with? Ethiopia's form of system is a dictatorship so what right have they to praise our government that had a 'fair' election? This is proof of Ethiopia's contempt of division in the horn of africa, but its also proof of what they could'nt achieve because of how selfish they are with power, let the somalanders at least understand that.

Ethiopia is our big brother. It demonstrated time after time, that we can rely on them.

Somaliland and Ethiopia benefit well from their honest friendship. There is also great potential in new areas that the two country can work together in partnership, such as creating common market in order to achieve better trade conditions for our small and medium business people.

I believe Ethiopia needs to give more access to it's market to Somaliland investors and traders. There are a lot of wealthy Somalilanders in the Diaspora and at home. Some are already doing very well in Ethiopia.

About the special relationships between Somaliland and Ethiopia,
as a matter of fact, whats happening here is, both countries need each
others relationships, the politics of both countries e-harmonize each others
political security and stability, and economic ties(Berbera Port)and so forth.
For Ethiopia Somaliland is big catch and Ethiopia knows if it loses Somaliland
there will be more problems in Ethiopia not from Somaliland but from all the
    other Ethiopian foes around.

Therefore, the sooner the Somaliland issue ends honeymooning the better
for Ethiopia and the whole of East African Countries.

I for one, do not trust the Ethiopian government intentions when it comes to Somali Issues. If Ethiopia want to be true friends of Somaliland people why is it not recognizing her true friend as it calls itself when she speak of Somaliland. Anything less than recognizing Somaliland statehood is not a true friend period.

It's amazing how some people do not get the basics. A neighbor country who has had prevously war with each other can not recognize a state from the other. If Ethiopia goes first it's not even valid because Ethiopia has its own interest in the region so the international community will not welcome Ethiopia if it recognizes Somaliland because they know the history of the Somali and Ethiopian people.

What we need is like South Africa, Senegal, Nigeria or Ghana, those nautral countries. Ethiopia is 100% with Somaliland.

To all that say Ethiopia is a friend of Somalis, your all imposter and liars! If Ethiopia is a true friend, they would give back what they stole, Ogaden, or else they undermine there own security in their lands because have self declaring Somalis trapped inside they're coutry due to colonial betrayal and they are almost being ethnically cleansed. Plus Ethiopians are highlanders, not nomads so they will never be Somalis, what ever attempts to try and intermix through false hope and rape, the bottom and most crucial line is ,WE DONT LIKE YOU! The attempt to conquer the cush under ethiopia is futile and is actually the downfall of ethiopia. I guarantee you we will get back our land with or without Somalilands help, just remember it's us ogaden have more of a right to independence yet we are the ones more determined to see a united somalia. from Garissa to dir diwa to Djibouti and Somaliland, why on earth does any have to argue against it? why does anyone have to shy away from it? when you think about betrayal think about the Somalis because they have witnessed it from they're own so called ''brothers'' Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is a neighbouring country and one we must keep good relations with. It seems to me that they accepted as and care for us enough because they realise the importance of keeping good relations with us; this is a mutual benefit. So what if Somalia and Ethiopia fought in stone ages? Germany fought with most Europeans in bitter wars, but they are not isolated. In fact they are a force in leading the EU. Stop being so anxious and learn to deal with neighbouring countries with better diplomacy and put your country’s interest first. Realism is the best policy in this stance. Everyone’s a threat, but don’t show your fear. Instead, take the initiative to lead.

Now we befriend the enemy of our forefathers and collaborate with them in order to attain our minor goals. Its known that many of the parties in Sland get regular visits from Ethiopian Secret police in order to give them whatever information they have.

As for the ogaden way guy, your thinking is backwards. Do you really think that the people of ogaden want to leave Ethiopia to join a nation where there is no functioning government and where murder happens regularly.

Somalilanders, check the article written on this subject at nazret.com on the url i am posting, and read the comments after by Ethiopians showing how we admire your fight towards recognition, democracy and against terrorism.

Somaliland need its neighbors like Djibouti, Etho and Somalia to keep it peace. Somaliland has no choice when it come to Ethop at least for now. Not to do what Ethopia want meant there won't be Somaliland and that is the reality.

Kayse is telling us he is from Diridoba so it will be good if he called himself Somalis in Ethopia. What make people Somalilanders when people from Ogaden claiming they are S.landers that i don't have problem with it. People should realized we can't have double stander by discriminating Somalis. If people from Diridoba is Somalilanders, then people from Bosaso and Mogadishu are even more closer to S.land. I think all Somali administrations are clan base where as long as one belong to Somali clans living in Somaliland become citizen while calling refugees for others who came from same area since their clans are not present in S.land.

Given the democratic challenges Somaliland have fulfilled in the June 26 2010, elections, witnessed by international observers, and the world congrats/supporting the peaceful successes Somaliland displayed, and looking at the Somalia massacres of its people, how then do you want Somaliland to deal with the Somalia crisis???
Lets be practically realistic. We can see Somalia is sadly a battlefield
of many faces in the fighting. What you want Somaliland to do, given
the unfortunate background massacres and cleansing the Somaliland
peoples ethemselves ncountered from the brutal Regimes of Somalia.

Simply Submit again (isdhiib mar labaad), doesn't make sense.

Yes we can understand why 200 were killed in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the most diverse nation in Africa with more than 200 ethnic groups so handling and satisfying all is enormous task. Also there is a lot of peace spoilers in Ethiopia such as Shabia (Isaias Afewerki's foot soldiers), OLF, ONLF, etc.

The best solution is for Ethiopia to recognize Somaliland and take some pressure of Ethiopia for instance we know the isaak and dir clans of Somaliland also settle in the Somali state, so having a government in Jigjiga entirely of isaak and dir will guarantee the wipe out off Ogaden rebels. Then Ethiopia can focus on Oromia and also for this we should recognise South Sudan, and get Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda (Tutsi government) and South Sudan to cope up with the OLF threats in the South and South East.

Finally we give more autonomy rights to the warrior Afar and give them more role to play in their region and help them to take arms against Shabia government in Asmara and Djibouti. By now Ethiopia has access to Berbera port and Lamu port (Kenya) and dont need Djibouti.

Somaliland will run it's territory as well as Somali state even though it's in Ethiopia and exporting it's natural gas through Berbera is a lot faster and secure.

Ethiopia and Somaliland will rule the Horn for ever in peace and democratically. West has no choice but to endorse this just as their endorsed our earlier agreements such as Ogaden region.

Kayse qabyaalada iskaa dhaaf. This is the biggest 'illness' consuming the minds of all Somalis. As usual your perspective is riddled with 'half truths' and are made on baseless grounds. Being against the biggest tribe of Somalia (when all Somali inhabited lands are included) you prove the fact you are anti Darod. Tribalism is a backward mentality that is against our Deen- Islam. When are Somalis going to stay away from this mentality? Well not now, but the future. When people like Kayse stop making arguments on the basis Isaaq tribe is better than Darod tribe, or Hawiye tribe is better than Rahaweyn tribe and so on and so forth. Down with Qabyaaladnimo and yes to Midnimo and Ikhwaanimo.

  19. Ahmed says:

Somaliland as a country has to work together with other regional countries to maintain order and stability. There are two levels of engagement, one level being the overt engagement which we see portrayed in the media, this may or may not be the actual official strategy.
The other level of engagement is often far more subliminal and covert, where the country has plans in accord with political, economical and military aims – these plans are often unknown to the public.

Somaliland currently, is lacking the latter strategy. Let's hope the new administration has better vision about how to achieve independence, grow the economy, limit the environmental constraints and deal with outstanding, yet imminent security issues. It's interesting how Ethiopia has easy access to Somaliland and probably knows all its issues inside out, whilst Somaliland is in the dark about Ethiopia's real aims. It's all about intelligence.
Somaliland has an interest in engaging with and maintaining relations with Ethiopia and vice versa. However, as i have said many times before Somaliland politicians need to understand that Ethiopia is only acting out and interested in its own strategic goals. Ethiopia is no friend and will switch on Somaliland should need be. So Keep yours friends close and your enemies Closer. and Somaliland should have contingency plans close for when Somaliland is no longer an ally of convenience.

P.S Kayse, to now know that you're (partly?) from Ethiopia explains a lot.
