January 31, 2012   ·   32 Comments

ADDIS ABABA-The government of Ethiopia and Somaliland held talks on regarding the recent skirmishes between Somaliland national army and militia group in Buhodle. This recent skirmishing in Buhoodle town and the wider implications it could have in the regional was the topic on the table as both Foreign and Interior Minister’s of Somaliland visited Addis this week. According to reliable source in Addis the delegation of Somaliland Minister consisting of Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Omar and Interior Minister Mohamed Nur Duur they held meetings with Foreign Minister of Ethiopia Mr. Hailemariam Desanlegn and senior security officials regarding the hostilities in Buhodle.

There are other reports that indicate an accusatory culpability to Somali administration province in Ethiopia that they have aided and abetted the warlords that held a tribal meeting in Taleeh by providing security guards that escorted them to Taleh.

Somaliland government has forwarded memo of concern on that matter to Ethiopian representative to Hargeisa which has denied that his government was assisting the terrorist group that met in Taleh. Last week’s conflict in Buhoodle town has seen the result of 40 people killed between Somaliland forces and the local militia headed by US Professor Ali Khalif.

  1. Abdi2 says:

It is really clear that the administration of the Kalisha 5aad is hostile to Somaliland and I would not be surprising to see them interfering or intervening in this conflict by siding with this "Nabad Diid" intended to destabilize Somaliland and undermine its hard earn achievement in an attempt to drag Somaliland to the Somali conflict. They are obviously doing this out of a sinister belief in a tribal affiliation to the rebels, Therefore it is only fitting that Somaliland evokes Ethiopia's security arrangements and relationship with its Somaliland counterpart and urges Ethiopian Central government to meet its obligations.

  2. Omer Hussein Dualeh says:

Where are our people in that Province? Are they sitting duck out there? Why we are not part of this local government and why Ethiopia allowed this. If that is the case and we cannot be part of that province, we shall demand the Reserve Area from the Ethiopian government., as stipulated by the, then Somaliland constitution of 1960 prepared by Britain, which clearly says, government of Somaliland must negotiate Reserve Area with the government of Ethiopia.

I do not know, why our people in that area are not fighting for their right.

  3. Abdi2 says:

There is already some reports in Hadhwanaag and Oodweynenews that the president of the Kaliisha 5aad has made it clear that he is extending support to the Nabad Diid terrorist. This would be a disaster for Ethiopia if it continues to support this hostile administration. Ethiopia must act soon and restore confidence that it is serious about peace and security in the Zone. The government of the 5th Zone has already been terrorizing the people in this Zone suspected to be affiliated with Somaliland people. This would only destabilize the Zone and create more problems for Ethiopia and Somaliland which they can't afford. The Good people of Somaliland and Ethiopia must act together to resolve this swiftly before it becomes a major problem. Ethiopia must also seriously consider either to bring about an inclusive regional government in the 5th Zone or entertain the concept of self adminstration of the Northeastern part of the 5th Zone dominated by the Isaq, Isa and Gadoboursi people.

  4. bob says:

Omer have our people not seen enough fighting? Somali's everywhere are sick to death of skirmishes and to be honest the prosperity fo Somaliland goes hand in hand with the development of Ethiopia. The folks in Djibouti are smart enough to wake up to this fact, what is your concern?

It was not that long ago we were all refugees in Dire Dawa and Jigjiga. While the late AbdulMajid helped our people greatly, it is our duty to act as wise neighbours despite who might or might not have supported Taleeh. Was not the main guy escourted by Sland troops for much of his journey to Taleeh?

  5. PuntlandGeezer says:

lol somalilanders never seem to amaze me, wen they ave be defeated in the battlefield, they always run to their master for aid but unfortunately abesha wont be able to help you this time cuz there iz a emerging government in mogadishu & most important thing is somalis are united wen it comes to somalia sovereignty & territorial integrity.
Buhodle was just a beginning to test the ethiopian stooge in hargeisa military force but we all kno that they are weak in financial & military.

    • jambazi says:

we will see who is weak, especially now you have created a soft underbelly for yourself which we will be targeting. if you are smart you'll figure out what i talking about.

    • Gambella Man says:

I wonder why you even comment on this forum, obviously you have hatred for Somalilanders, every comment you post ends up with -10 thumbs down or more. This shows you have nothing in common with Somalilanders, and they have no desire to communicate with people of your type backwarded mentality.

I tell you 99/100 Somalilander visitors on this site agree with my views and comments than yours.

      • mohamed cheers says:

        Yes I do..yes we do…Thanks goodman Gambella.
        Cheers.

        • Gambella Man says:

          Cheers Mohamed fellow goodman

  6. SSC says:

dare to face us alone without help from habashi

    • SNM says:

SSC stands for Sub sub clan….. Now that is cleared up. I dare you to face us without you're stooges…mmm Just as I thought. What is good enough for you isn't for others. We should play you and you're ilk by your own rules. What ever rule you choose to take at the time I should say?

  7. HMObsiye says:

I hope this so-called Zone 5 president, will be smart enough not to open crisis among Somalis within this zone. Did he forget there are over 30 different clans of Somalis in that zone?If his clan interfere with Somaliland affairs, then other Somali clans might take side and I am sure this not the scenario that Ethiopian federal government will look forward to.

I hope this guy will come to his sense and listen to his master, the Ethiopia, otherwise, his days at this office is numbered.

  8. Mohamd says:

It is clear that the Buhodle clashes were sponsored by Galaydh. SL should seek this American terrorists and issue an arrest warrant.

  9. abdi says:

Adisababa needs to be careful about the terror groups which operating in and around the boarders between he two countries.

  10. Gambella Man says:

Somaliland needs at the very least some partial recognition of its borders by international bodies in order to prevent territory breaches and so the world will see the agressor in ssc. In secret meetings with international leaders, Ethiopia has been lobbying for "partial recognition" of Somaliland by the world.
    http://danielberhane.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/wik

As Somalilanders, such recognition would be great as it would push foreign investors to look into the Northern peaceful developping territory in Somalia they never knew existed.

    • mohamed cheers says:

That's old stuff, let's focus on the current issues.
      Cheers.

  11. Gobaad says:

Gambella man, "partial recognition" is not what Somaliland is interest, after ill-fated failed union. Nothing less than full recognition and reverting to our 1960 Statehood recognized by 35 Countries.

The International Community has to know that Somaliland is not region within a country breaking away from it, but a country with International defined borders. Settling for anything less is an insult and a stern violation fo our existence.

    • jambazi says:

It is one step in the right dreiction, a step which is highly welcomed and appreciated. So Ethiopia keep up the good work.

    • Gambella Man says:

I agree, eventually full recognition of independant Somaliland state should be the goal. But its not going to come fast. In time, until then this would be a push in that direction. I wonder why you Somalilanders arent hounding Djibouti on this issue? They should be the first nation to recognize your independance. If Ethiopia does it will give us the reputation of the divider and destroyer of Somalia which isnt our intention.

Djibouti why are you so quiet?

      • inayuusuf says:

        @ Gambella Man
Put it simple.. Djibouti is a tiny country with no resources at all and survives on the help of rich Arabs who wrongfully believe recognising SL will bring their enemies to their doorsteps.

We better work hard in nullifying this misbelieve.

      • Gobaad says:

Gambella Man, the problem is not only between Somaliland and Somalia, but there are foreign political actors playing roles behind the seen and there are lot of players, political wrangling, and appeasement on Somaliland's expenses which is not fair. "…If Ethiopia does it will give us the reputation of the divider and destroyer of Somalia which isnt our intention." And there are excuses such as this that I don't want to be the first one who divides Somalia. That is absurd, The dream of great Somalia which was Somaliland, Somalia,Jabouti, Somali-Ethiopia, and Somali-Kenya is missing and bringing them together under one flag is not in sight any time soon. Only Somaliland and Somalia joined into an ill-fated union and failed miseriably. Thus, Somaliland has reverted into its former Statehood. We are not joined on the hips. Somalia obsessively clinging to Somaliland will not serve any good to any of us. We should give each other our blessings and move on.

  12. Nabadoon says:

I think there are two major things that are required to be undertaken by Somaliland. One, Somaliland government must be bold in articulating their concerns to Ethiopian government as relationship is a reciprocal one – goes both ways. Second, our Somalialnd people must involve and participate all political activities in Zone5 as we have all the means – Money and people.

If two above stated points are implemented , we shall see big difference for the next 5 years.

  13. Allemagan says:

Normally border skirmishes used to happen between Somalia and Ethiopia. Today, there are no two Somalis who can find a solution for their internal problems without heading to Addis Ababa and involving Meles Zenawi. Let us pray that common sense prevails between Somali people before we become one of the peoples and nationalities of Ethiopia. What a shame!

    • warya says:

Makes sense, but why don't you go preach this to Cali Khalif, Saleban, sabrey and the G9. They all seem to be competing to be the next Dhulbhante IDOL

  14. Jans says:

I have been trying to tell you people this for a long time Darood only care about themselves. I should know, you know how much flack my parents catch for supporting Somaliland? Gadabirsee and Isse as well as Hawiye should be paying attention if darood is willing to attack Somaliland simply bc of a sub clan that refuses to coexist with others when they are in the minority and willing to start wars just to stay in power themselves, What do you think they will do if somalia is united again? They dont care about Somali unity or brotherhood if that was the case then why cant they live in peace with those closest to them who have intermarried with them? Simply, because they are greedy!

    • PuntlandGeezer says:

somalis created somalia & british white trash created somaliland.

  15. Omer Hussein Dualeh says:

We Somalilanders obstain the finger pointing, but there is something true about what you said Jans. It is their interest to engage and stay with the people they knew centuries and have blood relations. Going and supporting tribe never ever gives you a peace and tranquility in this part of the world. Majority of those who reside and share the land of Sool, Sanaag East, and Bohoodle are with the people they know and share a common destiny, but few who migrated their offspring out, are the ones who are creating all this fuss.

We shall prevail and succeed in creating peace, and the God, the Almighty knows the hearts and minds of Somalilanders. They are good people and forgiving, but everything has a limit.

    • Hassan says:

Its it funny how you somalilanders consider Mr. Galaykh a terrorist but we, the people of Khatumo state of Somalia consider him a Hero. In the other way around Khatumo people consider Mr. Silaanyo a criminal while he's your president. so to those of you from both sides, how do we resolve such a matter.

dont get emotional just express a solution.

      Cajiib

      • I Jama says:

According to those who attended the meeting Mr Galaykh high jacked the meeting. Secondly, the meeting outcome was not ratified by the majority for which it claims it represents i.e he attempted a coup and it couldn't. So he attempted to use violence by arming a militia and the SL authorities issued a warrant for his arrest and anyone caught with a gun. The over reaction of the so called Khatumo supporters caused armed clashes between the authorities of the Somaliland government and the militia. Subsequent attempts to ambush the SL authorities by this militia in Khalshaale caused casulties on both sides. Resulting on his escape over the border to Ethiopia.

Our President Mudane Mohammed Ahmed Silanyo was elected in what was confirmed by the EU and international observers as fair and free vote. From the previous elected President who handed over accordingly.

If you don't know the difference between a coup and a democratically elected government then I suggest you take the time to learn.

  16. Gobaad says:

rumour has it that Mr Galaykh is in Ethiopian custody. Good riddance of a bad rubbish!

  17. inayuusuf says:

    @ Hassan
You say Glaydh is seen as hero by Dhulos.. but how poor is that judgment, Pal. Apart from the disagreement among Dhulos, the so-called state is not viable economically (no resources other than livestock which has to go thru SL or Maj for export), geographically (Cayn & Sanaag are shared by others) and politically (Majeerteenia dislikes it).
Moreover, Majeerteen will block you at the TFG and will not allow you to have a share. Don't you remember that this Abdil-Weli removed the only cabinet you had in the TFG? Don't you see that the current TFG cabinets are fully divided between Majeerteen and Hawiye?

We Somalilanders are absolutely not afraid of Dhulos becoming any thing as long as Majeerteen is there.
