On August 6th Danida opened a project office in Somaliland stepping up the Danish contribution towards a more stable Somalia. The office is the first Western bilateral office in Somaliland. The initiative makes Denmark one of the first donors to support locally-defined development needs in the region.

On the the opening of the project office in Hargeisa the Danish Minister for Development Corporation, Christian Friis Bach, states:<

"With the opening of the project office in Somaliland we are taking an important step in supporting fragile states. The development coorporation in fragile states is risky; however, the willingness to take risks is crucial in order to kick start the development in these countries, where the need is also the gravest."

Denmark is contributing with 112 million Danish kroner over the next four years to Somaliland with an objective to contribute to a more stable Somalia capable of handling its own security and promoting a stable economic and social development. The fund will among others be used to set up a Somaliland fund, which will support development priorities defined in the national development plan for Somaliland. Focus will be on the continuous development of public institutions, the democratic process, strengthening of the private sector as well as supporting locally based development initiatives.

The Minister for Development Corporation further explains:

"The administration in Hargeisa has shown the willingness to lead the people of Somaliland towards reconstruction. Denmark is acknowledging this effort by enhancing the development support to Somaliland. Placing a Danish programme coordinator in Hargeisa, enables Denmark to have a daily dialogue with the people and the authorities of Somaliland, which will improve support to and monitoring of Danish supported activities?"

Background

Monday 6th August a Danish Programme Coordinator started setting up a Danish development programme in Somaliland in close cooperation with the local authorities. Thereby, Denmark is the first western country to open a project office in the regional capital, Hargeisa.

Since the collapse of Somalia in 1991 that left the country in a devastating economic, social and humanitarian crisis for more than twenty years, Somaliland, in North-western Somalia, has made great progress in terms of creating stability and development. A locally based peace-and democratization process has created increased stability and state-like structures including a constitution and government institutions are being developed.

Besides development aid, Denmark is implementing a range of projects targeting Somalia under the Peace and Stabilization Fund, which the Government set up for the purpose of working in fragile states.

I hope one of the development priorities of the Somaliland government is to build better roads to and within Sanaag. It would be in everyones interests.

  2. mohamed cheers says:

Sanaag Province is considered the richest in all resources and climatewise and it would be
naive on the Silaanyo Govt not to priortize attentions of his Govt to this blessed Province.
    Cheers.

    • khaatumo citizen says:

but Sanaag is ruled by puntland apart from western Cerigabo and Ceelafwayne disrict and HY won't allow Siillanyo to interfere their territory

        • khaatumo citizen says:

            Khaatumo Citizen
If you attend to University then why are you so obsessed with tribalism! Talk about how to develop your region and the country in general.

I welcome this development which will benefit the northern Somalis in Somalia's Somaliland region. I know its a dangerous announcement because many of the scessionists will try to misinterpret the Danish government.

This is not a recognition nor does Denmark support the division of Somalia or any nation for that matter. It strongly believes in development and one way is direct contact. I personally admire the Danish initiatives because I did benefit from their generous support for the Somali people. Last time, I took my relative to the Danish Clinic in Hargeisa,, who were able to diagnose him and give him the right medications. Now he is a healthy and strong man.

That clinic is one of the most trusted clinics in Hargeisa and I am sure this new office will win the support of the Somalis in the north of the country.

The Danish language on this post is also clear, Hargeisa is indeed a regional capital and not a capital city.

  4. haasan yaqaan says:

Are you kidding? Building better roads by Siilaanyo? Your are dreaming? Siilaanyo and his diaspora around him came to robe the country. Noble ideas are no one's mind at this time

    • Kayse says:

hahahaha Man it seems like you know them too well too. They patch together Siad's former roads and fill with some cheap sand they collect from dooxa with donkey cart. They only smooth out few roads near Morgan's house and that Total petrol station.

They can even take out the trash and cows that sit in front of their supposed "madaxtooyo/Presidential villa"–what hope is there for roads?

There is no government in Somaliland except bunch of corrupted and tribal maniacs from the Diaspora. The worst are Silanyo, Hersi Gaab, Amina Tugo and that mining minister whatever his name is. Not worth knowing his name.

Soon or later, if things continue this way, I am going to start a rebel group with the help of Somalia and Ethiopia against warlord Silanyo.

I invite all like minded people to be ready. I will probably set this up after my visit to Hargeisa. There is already huge dislike for Silaanyo and my comments are working.

Local people should be the rulers of their land not Diaspora money hungry crooks.

  6. Aisha says:

Whether you support the Somaliland government or not, can we all just put or political loyalties aside and just agree that Sanaag desperately needs to be rebuilt?

Lets not allow petty differences get in the way of peace and progress. Children, women, the elderly, people who need immediate medical attention won't care who built the road.

  7. Abdid says:

    Mr kaysey
Do you ever get tired of repeating yourself? Somaliland of Somali region
    Blah blah blah
Wallahi you are hiding behind your screen… Go take your puntland
    Propaganda
Do not wast your time my friend sld is not part of Somalis
I wish I could see you in gabley in December I will show SNM shaabuug
