The Western countries are attacking the Libyan dictator’s forces day in and day out until the dictator is either killed or he surrenders power. We are told that this is carried out to safe the lives of the Libyan civilians, which I very much doubt. I agree with the capture and overthrowing of all dictatorial regimes in the Muslim and the Arab world, however I think the Western military mission in Libya is neither for human rights nor for democracy, but instead, I believe it is all about oil and nothing but oil. To prove my point let me remind the world that there is another Muslim and African country, whose population suffered far worst human rights violation than Libyans of today and whose rights are being deprived of up to this day by the Western countries. That country is Somaliland.
More than three decades have elapsed since Somaliland; a nation of with population of almost four million became the target for Somalia’s ruthless Siad Barre’s war machine. As consequence almost all the Somaliland population was expelled from their home country to the neighboring hostile Ethiopian desert, where tens of thousand of children, pregnant women and elderly people’s lives were lost due to malnutrition compounded with malaria, cholera and other water-born illnesses. Additionally, tens of thousands who were not so lucky to flee early enough across the Ethiopian boarder were plainly tortured, raped and murdered in cold blood by the Mogadishu’s military regime. The Somaliland villages, towns and cities were reduced to ashes. Even the Somaliland livestock was not exempted from the regime’s appalling crimes – their sources of drinking water were poisoned.
While ethnic cleansing was taking place in Somaliland, the United States of America was supplying arms to Siad Barre and needless to say the rest of the western world was watching- not uttering a single word in opposition to those crimes against humanity. Most of the Siad Barre deputies, who perpetrated all these immoral acts, live in peace in many capitals of the free world without the fear of reprisals or prosecution. Think of the lieutenants of Adolf Hitler seeking refuge in London, Washington, Paris or even Oslo, the home of the noble peace prize. You might say “unbelievable” but a similar version of this is indisputably in attendance today in those cities – do the western leaders feel or sympathizes with Somaliland’s anguish and frustration? Certainly not!
In spite of what you would think, for the last two decades Somaliland demonstrated to the world that a small impoverished nation in sub-Saharan Africa was able to build single-handedly one of the highest standards of political stability and democratic governance from the ruins of thirty years of genocide and destruction. Somaliland’s democracy was not imposed by the Western countries nor was it invaded and its leader overthrown, but it was built from the bottom up by its own people without external help.
Unlike Somalia, the home of international terrorists and sea pirates, Somaliland is democratic and is in peace with itself and the rest of the world. Paradoxically, instead of rewarding Somaliland for its democratization with international recognition and helping it access the international mechanisms for development and capacity building, The Western leaders are waiting to get “the beatifying nod” of the Somalia warlords and the seal of approval from African dictators. This is as absurd as telling someone to chase a mirage to quash his thirst. Now, tell me how unpractical and deceitful the western leaders are towards Somaliland? Without a doubt, every sane person on earth will not call this tail-chasing- stumpy production a democratic sincerity, but as an alternative will name it the mother of all hypocrisies! I am sorry to strip it down, but this is the veracity.

Good that yu understood the double standard of the West' but brother Yusuf you missed to mention that all Somalis suffered under the dictatorship of Siad Bare and not only Somalilanders and therefore this was a suffering we all shared. The African Union has recently complained that the UN is too slow to respond a request made by the AU asking for a sea and air blockade of Somali waters and no credible answer yet while it only took a week for UN to approve the Arab request of Libya intervention. The situation in the South is more urgent for the UN and the AU to respond to and find solution than the one in Somaliland, Somaliland is peaceful and we pray it stays that way.
Abdi Khase,
What you do not understand is that the case of Somaliland was a pure genocide. Besides, what happening in Somalia is power hungary savages fighting one another for power and money.
cheers
We Somalilander are suffering from a same problems Power Savages apposing one another but not distructive so far.
I doubt the Somaliland issue and the Libyan issue are co-related. The whole Arabian Peninsular
suddenly erupted into unpredicted uprisings and the whole real World of the IC/UN could no longer
ignore certain brutalities like Libyan Gaddafi and others as well. Besides why blame the West..the Arab league resolutions thru the UN are being executed to stop the Libyan, Yemen and others against
destroying their own people and countries. The Somaliland problems were mishandled by its own
Regimes by in my view not aggressively following the correct diplomatic procedures but rather
blindly chasing mirage political channels of no dividend returns.
You know what I mean.
Cheers.
The writer accused the USA of supplying weapons to Siad Bare while ethnic cleansing was taking place woow I have no doubt that the USA puts its interest first before everything else' but they did not supply weapons to the former dictator and to be fair to the dead dictator he himself did not simply attack civilians instead he was responding to a rebellion. Armed militia attacked government soldiers and took over Hargisa and so he responded it as any dictator would do and so the civilians found themselves in the cross fire. May be SNM has to take part of the blame for fighting inside their own civilians.
said barre is in hell burning i dnt kno wot u talking bout my friend, e killed many ppl who will never forgive him. he is the people of hell
To Saacid,
Give me break! how can you call freedom fighters militia? when i do not support war and people killing each other, again if your freedom, liberty is not respected by tryant and his supports, i gues you do not have any other options, but to defend yourself and that is what SNM had done. what helped Siad Barre to do his dirty business and made for him possible to murder half million people in the North is people like you who are deluded with reality.
The World is now facing new challenges of civilian uprisings against unchanging dictatorships
all across many countries which intended to bring about much needed new world order for a better
world of peaceful co-existence based on mutual respect free from arms race and military conflicts.
A better world where all human beings share Mother Natures earthly wealth and resources
in a more developed open markets backed and supervised by good governance laws of goodwill
intentions. The Human races (beings) are one big family of Nations and should be taken care of
as such with respect based on justice.
Cheers.
Dr. Yusuf speaks the truth. Western countries want to spend billions to help create democracies in Africa, but they cannot be bothered to recognize the democracy that already exists in front of their eyes.
West are not serious about democracy, but like Americans say "Business is Business" all they care is business, and one of the reasons that they do not want to see Somaliland separate, is the concession that Conoco-Chevron signed with Afweyne. They are only thinking of their interest, and do not give a damn to democracy.
We have created a unique democracy [combined with modern D and our Culture], which they appreciate how we did it, but cannot face it without getting something out of it. Well we have everything they can think of it. Do they know that? I believe not. There will be a day that they will rush to Somaliland and it's not far. We can survive like we have been doing centuries and we are not desperate. We shall continue building our country and when time comes, we shall see who wins.
Two States solution (Somaliland Somalia)…if tt's not the case I don't know what will.
Cheers.
Somaliland has been successful because it did not get aid from the blood sucking agencies like the world bank and IMF, please stay vigilant against these forces. so maybe it is a blessing that the West is not interested in Somaliland.
Who says the West is not interested in Somaliland. Why the majority of British DFID aid is earmarked for
Somaliland and the Dai TIS is about to follow suit specially when Somaliland gained the IC real
World appreciable credibility for fulfilling all the necessary reqirements pertaining to good self governance
against the rivalry of much troubled Somalia. I agree with you that Somaliland should avoid falling
victim to the IMF/World bank and instead should find other free debt ways to develop the country's
National wealth resources to skip headlong slavery debits etc. Free markets for International WTO
is also welcome. Somaliland Geolocation, Wealth resources and small population are all
in perfect harmony influencing real investments etc.
Cheers.
Yes, the IMF and WOrld Bank are blood-sucking agencies that can destroy a country's economy. Look at the Freek people protesting in the streets when they herad the IMF was coming to them.

I think Jama is missing the point. He does not understand or tries to ignore the historical facts of Somaliland and the west. There enough paper documentation and even video tapes from the USA General accounting office, demonstrating that the USA was arming Siad Barre in 1988 while genocide was in progress in Somaliland. If anyone is spitting on his face it is none but Mr. Jama. The Ethiopia war is a whole different topic which is not mentioned in this article. I should say well done to the author and compliment him for his insight.
Asha, If Said Barre was being armed by the USA how come Siad Barre fled the country without any help or even aid to return. Please don't confuse USA relations with USA actually helping in keeping a dictator in… not possible nor does it make sense. Whatever the West was doing in Somalia at that time was more likely related to the peace agreement it made possible between Somalia and Ethiopia. Yes even though the author did not mention Ethiopia you will find it is still relevant information that played a part in the involvement of the West with Somalia at that time.
Jama you are in a different frequency with the rest of the world, please tune-up and put your history together.
@amina. try to elaborate as my opinion was clear but yours isn't???
Jama, markaan geel u heeso ayaan gorayo u heestaa. You are the only person who believes that the USA was not supporting Siad Barre both financially and militarily, while genocide was being committed. To answer your question with a question; How come the Shah of Iran was defeated by the ayatollah revolution, how come Mubarak and Bin Ali were thrown out of power? these guys were even closer to the USA than Siad Barre and if the USA could not protect them then Siad Barre suffered the same faith. My advice to you is to look at the facts more carefully with a keen analytic eye before start a debate. You think your opinion is clear but it is not.
Amina, Hashu maankeyga ayeey gatay ee masaar bayliqday. First of all, Mubarak and Bin Ali are nothing like the evil Said Barre nor is today the same as 20 years ago. Siad Barres grip on Somalia was such that if USA attempted to interfere he could have committed. The communist lead countries such as Somalia had the worst human rights atrocities then any other nation. Bearing this in mind you should also note SNM formed 1981 in the west some seven years before. Which was later joined by others until Said Barre was ousted. This shows liberation had to come from its people which thankfully it has and finally it came to an end in 1991. After this the USA joined the UN in an operation called 'Restore Hope' which to their surprise showed hostility from the Somali people themselves. In the North Egale asked UNISOM to leave 1993. So, it is Somali people who refused intervention when it came because of our inbread hate for 'Outsiders' and our war lords fear other clans take an advantage over them. Also more importantly Osama Bin Laden used this as a weakness of the USA for withdrawing. So the UNISOM consisted of different troops some where Pakistani who were killed in the 'Mogadishu War'. Therefore, I don't blame them nor do I think they could have helped Somali or Somaliland at that time short of continuing a war which would have changed from a peace keeping mission into a war with Somalia. There are more reasons and many more attempts that failed due to our own leaders/warlords short comings.
Please note my mention of Osama Bin Laden and Pakistani troops killed by Somalis loyal to Aideed. This is relevant. Finally, the USA advised warlords that agreement had to come from all the people and this is what they recommended after they experienced our clannish disposition not to mention our hospitality towards them!!!!
Jama, let us end it right here. You talking about Somalia and I see nobody talking about Somalia here. We are all talking about Somaliland and not Somalia. So let us not mix things up. I agree your part regarding Somalia though.
Wouldnt it be nice if we had the American and NATO fire power against Siad Bare and the fagesh regime in Mogadishu? Ofcourse right? I think now the civilians in Libya deserve that sheild. Let Dictator Qaddafi feel the heat.
Yes, it would have been nice. If you had the USA support, Mogadishu would have been a different place today. We would have had peace and tranquility under the SNM, just like Somaliland. My respect goes to the SNM, the only libration movement in the world that has handed power to civilians after it liberated a country from a stupid dictator.
TO THOSE WHO ALWAYS MURDER MAKE JUSTIFICATION SO EASY, WHY SOMALILAND NEVER LEAVE MY LAND LASCANOOD, WHY SOMALILAND WANT TO SELL UK MY HOMELAND BY CALLING IT PART OF SOMALILAND,SO THE ONLY THINK YOU NEED TO ASK IS WHO WAS PREVIOUSLY WRONG IS STILL WRONG AND THAT IS SOMALILAND. WORLD SHOULD TELL THE SOMALILAND THE DEAD DREAM AND TO FACE THE REALITY BECOUSE TRIBE CAN NOT BE RECOGNIZE AND SO INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SPECIALTY UK THAT YOU BELIEVE SHOULD START TO RECOGNIZE ALL SOMALI TRIBES. FINALLY, SIYAD BARE MURDERED MANY SOMALIS BUT YOU ALWAYS CONSIDER THAT YOU ARE THE ONLY VICTIM TO SELL THE UK , MAY BE UK IS THE ONLY NAIVE IN EUROBE THAT CAN BE PERSUADED GOOD STORY. HEY SOMALIS TELL ALL YOUR TRIBES WHAT THE FORMER REGIME HAS INFLICTED ON THEM AND SELL UK…..THIS IS GOOD BUSSINESS AND STARTED BY SOMALILAND AND IT CALL IAM A NATION CALL SOMALILAND……MY NATION WILL BE CALL UKSOMALILAND.
i liked your article on "DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS FOR OIL" however i believe the Somali people especially, Somaliland Somalis can build their country. We should stop looking to the west and roll up our sleeves and build our country, depending on how you look at our situation , I think we are at a stage where we can start a fresh, with a progressive nation and its forward looking optimistic citizens. Please preach this angle, and Allah willing we can build our own country.
In the near future if we deal with other nations we are on equal footing and in harmony. Optimistic yes, but the evidence is all over the world Somalis immigrate to other nations and are always successful, we can do this and truly succeed in building a great nation that could be the envy of Africa. We are not too late. Therefore, let’s stop looking to other nations but to our own somaliness and build our country Inshalah.
