Coca-Cola Recipe Leaked: Alcohol and Anti-Muslim messages

Coca Cola contains alcohol and other drugs

BOSTON — Coca-Cola’s tightly guarded 125-year-old recipe was revealed last week by This American Life, a public radio show based in New York city.

“We think we may have found the original recipe for Coca Cola…and I am not kidding!” host Ira Glass says with excitment. He continues “I am not kidding. One of the most famously guarded trade secrets on the planet– I have it right here and I am going to read it to you. I am going to read it to the world.”

To find the recipe, Ira Glass turned to Charles Salter, a columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mr Salter originally discovered the Coke ingredients deep deep within the archives of the journal in 1979. Edition 18 of the Atlanta based journal contained a photo depicting a hand-written copy of John Pemberton’s original recipe in a leather-bound recipe book.

John Pemberton, an American pharmacist from Atlanta invented the Coca-Cola recipe in 1886 and has since stayed with family members and close friends. According to the This American Life, only two people know the recipe and they never travel on the same airliner. The radio also claims the recipe is “locked in a vault in Atlanta.”

Here are the recipe ingredients and we know it will definitely shock a lot of Muslims. For a long time, a large number of Muslims considered Coca Cola “Haram”; an Arabic word meaning forbidden. They claim if you hold a mirror next to the famous Coca-Cola trademark, it will reveals “La Mohammad. La Makkah” in Arabic, which litterally means “No Mohammad. No Mecca.” This is considered anti-Islamic and a slander.

Coca Cola contains alcohol and other drugs

The Coca Cola company responded throught their website: “This claim is not true. The Coca-Cola trademark was created in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, at a time and place where there was little knowledge of Arabic.

“The allegation has been brought before a number of senior Muslim clerics in the Middle East who researched it in detail and refuted the rumor outright.

“During the late 1990s, a special committee of authorities in Saudi Arabia, with representatives from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Trade, was formed to review the rumors against the Coca-Cola logo. The committee determined that there is no basis to these false allegations and that the Coca-Cola trademark does not connote anything defamatory to Islam.

“More recently, in May 2000, the Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar (the Islamic world’s foremost institute) Sheikh Nasr Farid Wassel, said that “the trademark does not injure Islam or Muslims directly or indirectly.” Moreover, he stated that Islam is against ‘the propagation of empty rumors and intended lies that affect either public or private interests.’

The ingridient includes alcohol and coca (plant that contains the cocaine), which are forbidden by Islamic law. Let’s see how they (Coca Cola Company) explain this one this time. According to Globes, a Muslim-Israeli has already filed a US$330 million class action suit against The Central Bottling Company Group Ltd. – Coca Cola’s Israel franchisee (see Israeli sues Coca Cola for containing alcohol).

This recipe was in hiding for 125 years! How long further they dare to hide, since those who may research the fack are in deep sleep? The problem is the owners and those who wish to know the fact are the same. Do anyone get what I mean?

We the Muslims do not have a chance to know it. Our scholars have already dismissed this allegations twice from the places that suppose to safeguard the religion. What else we could expect?

As a Somalilander, 99% of our people do not have the pleasure to drink this and I believe it does not concern us. Is anyone out there wish to tell me otherwise?

    Boqoljireh,

When it comes to areas like this, it does not matter whether your Somali, Lander or an alien. If you are Muslim it does concern you and the 99% you made up yourself means nothing. Infact, Somaliland is opening a coca cola plant. Most men chew qat and whats their choice of beverages? C – O – L – A.

    So abti, rethink.

Muslims should stop drinking coke not only does it contain alcohol as it shows and if you choose to know it while you know it, now it is haram. Secondly coca cola is bad for your teeth, the reason Somali qat chewers loss their teeth is not because of qat as many believe but its coca cola because those of you familiar with chemistry would know what citric acid and phosphoric acid (also in Coke) does to your teeth. It will erode your teeth. Read it here: http://www.scientificpsychic.com/health/teeth.htm

Coca cola = alcohol, citric acid, phosphoric acid and plenty of sugar = rotten teeth and haram.

There is nothing wrong with alcohol as long as it does not alter the mental state. I use products made from alcohol to wash hands etc. So stop making a fuss about frivolous issues. If we lived in an environment blessed with water, we would have also drank alcohol like white people. But because we don't have plentiful water, we use what little we have for nourishment than luxury.

I actually never like fizzy drinks, but people from third world countries are hang up with useless issues. The majority of the medicines we take for headaches and stomach-aches contain alcohol based chemicals. So are you also going to stop taking medicines?

We are a third world people because we have low IQ and respect nobody including ones own life. I am only telling you because I care, not because I want to mislead you. If you have an agenda , just be brave and admit instead of using Islam.

Just like when some people of certain IQ read the Quran about fighting non-believers, these certain people take it literally and declare Jihad on innocent people going on about their day. The person who is bothered with minuscule ammount of alcohol in anything is just no better than those "seef labood".

Our media should be cleverer than this, and not encourage people to waste their time going in the wrong paths.

Also, people in the UK are fond of fish and chips. Yet they are all ignorant about the beer used for the batter. Other products Muslims purchase from super markets include pancakes which are also made with beer to give them bubbles. Me thinks the world is much bigger than complaining about infidel pancakes and infidel fish and chips.

    • middlepath says:

      @Mohamed

      People from third world countries?

      Arrogant much?

Also dear, stop accusing others of having agenda and being paranoid.

i was only informing you that alcohol is haraam EXCEPT when used for medicine or used in wounds to remove germs during in surgeries or as you said used as hand gel. I think we agree on that.

Sure , the world is 'big' but our deen is bigger and I'm sure you know we should be as diligent as possible.

As for comparing me and others with those who blow things up ,I must say you do know how to make things up. How are we similar? They are clearly taking things out of context whereas Im not.

Islam walaal, is a very Academic religion, it is not about emotions or how I feel or what you feel or think, it is based on proofs and logic. So my proof is from the Quran which says that we should avoid drinking alcohol whereas your argument is based on opinion.

If you have low IQ, then that is you however, the rest of the so-called ''Third world'' contains geniuses, inventors, scientists, doctors, architects, academics, scholars etc. by the thousands if not the millions who are not supported by their governments and many of them leave to work for America (e.g. Nasa) or other countries. And lets not blame our people's piety in religion for whatever problems please.

The Islamic Civilization, had scholars who were well- versed in most fields known, most of them were polytechnics and scholars in Islam, so they were for example chemist+sheikh+astronomer+mathetician+surgeon etc and contributed in every field and brought Europe out of the darkness into the light.

These people were true Muslims, may Allah have mercy on them, because they studied the world and their Deen both as Allah says ''"Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding." ( Surah Imran 190)..so we are supposed to think:)

This has nothing to do with ''infidel'' pancake or whatever, (infidel is a christian term used in crusades, we say Kafir meaning one who hides the Truth knowingly), it is about being true to your beliefs to the best of your ability and if you are literally dying then alcohol becomes halal :)

Alcohol my friend is the one cause of the high crimes in the West, and governments spend millions on rehabilitations not to mention the number of crimes under the effect of alcohol and drunkness.

Well i dont agree Alcohol causing crime (if used properly). Thats where using it in moderation comes in. In any instance something can become bad for you or for the community if not used in moderation. Frankly I think there should be harsher penalties for thoughs who abuse it publicly… As for the change in the bible it happened after Jesus. Thats when god decided to do something different and use Jesus as the lamb of god instead of actually sacraficing an animal.

Back to the coke thing. The alcohol content in coke if there still is any is so minuet that there is no way it can affect someone because you drink it (again moderation) B)

       Reply
      • middlepath says:

There are campaigns on using alcohol in moderation, but yet alcoholism is causing crimes and wastes money and breaks homes not to mention teens drinking.
There is a law in Islam ''prevention is better than cure''.

You are the first christian I spoke to who admits that bible was changed! Thats interesting.
Nonetheless, we believe that Jesus was a Noble Prophet and that God does not need to sacrifice 'His son' or an innocent person to Forgive the sins of others as He says 'None shall bear the burden(sin) of another''. He simply Forgives anyone who Believes in Him from His Mercy. It does not make sense to say I can drink alcohol now because Jesus died for me, that means I may virtually do anything and still be forgiven. Jesus came to fulfill the Law sent with Moses not to break it as in the New Testament.

I invite you to read about Islam, perhaps you will be guided or at least learn something, it doesn't hurt :)

  23. Tom_Billesley says:

It is quite simple and inexpensive for a chemical analysis laboratory to determine the alcohol content of any liquid. You don't need to know the secret recipe. I've never seen anyone get drunk from drinking Coca Cola. Many natural foods such as the juice of ripe fruit may contain a miniscule trace of alcohols. Some food dishes in western countries have wine added during the cooking but all of the alcohol evaporates because of the heat of cooking. You can also buy "non-alcoholic" beer from which the alcohol is removed by a chemical process.
What is important is what is in the heart and mind of the person. Muslims do not knowingly take alcohol for pleasure and that is the fundamental choice made when being faithful to their religion.

     Reply
  24. Tom_Billesley says:

The rumours about alcohol content of Coca Cola are just malevolence directed at a non-muslim company because it is seen as representing western influence and therefore to be feared and rejected. Burger King had to withdraw a packaging for ice cream because one muslim man in England thought that an abstract swirl design on the lid looked to him as though it was arabic script and in his opinion resembled "Allah". When the name is seen appearing in a plant or the shape of clouds it is celebrated as a miracle, but If a non-muslim innocently creates a shape that only resembles the name it is an outrage? The same paranoid irrational fear is seen in Nigeria where the 'Boko Haram' movement wants to destroy any school where learning is from any book other than Islamic religious texts. When did learning become something to be feared and rejected?

  25. Kamal Southall says:

It doesn't have Coca anymore, this is common knowledge, the US government forced them to remive it from their recipie almost 80 years ago.

It does, Tom, have alcohol. This is a fact in fact most soft drinks/soda pop drinks do. This is because the flavor extracts used typically contain minute amounts of ethyl alcohol.

However the quantities are almost minute. There is probably more alcohol in a loaf of bread, due to natural yeast formation, than in Coca Cola. However it is part of the formula.

There are other reasons to avoid it, such as extremely high levels of sucrose or high fructose corn syrup which is notoriously unhealthy, and other unhealthy ingredients. Typically people will ignore these common sense reasons to moderate their intake, but when it comes to a supposedly haram ingredient get in a tizzy.

    People should be more introspective.

  26. ahlam says:

Tom,Islam definitely encourages Learning and Gaining Knowledge. If it didn't then we wouldnt have the Islamic Golden Age of Muslims Scientists and Scholars who contributed to our modern knowldge and without them Europe would probably still be in its' Dark Ages'.

People like Boko Haram are a few and don't speak for Islam ,you can find many such types in every religion and race.So it is not necessarily an issue with faith but with wisdom as usual.

It is common sense and morally correct to avoid using drugs or drinking alcohol for a variety of reasons like promoting irrationality and violence, immorality etc. This and smoking tobacco which causes cancer is forbidden in Islam. A Muslim's responsibility is to take care of their Body and Mind as it is an 'Amana' or a 'Trust' from Allah/God not something to play with.

So any unnecessary amount that leads to intoxication or affecting the brain or body in any way is not allowed. Therefore checking the amounts in food products is vital.

    Hope you understood this viewpoint:)

     Reply
  27. middlepath says:

    Kamal,

It is already explained by scholars way back, that the alcohol produced by yeast in bread is not haraam because it is very minute to the amount that it mixes with teh ingredients and is then falling under the rule of Istihlal : '' any substance that is so INSIGNIFICANT because of its quantity as mixed with an overriding halal substance'' is halaal. (but obviously it doesn't mean that we can taste a drop of alcohol.) The only time alcohol can be drunk is if you are dying and have no water whatsoever and you are literally desperate. Medicines is a different category itself so are perfumes and antiseptics that contain *synthetic alcohol* not ethyl alcohol from grapes or dates etc.

All pop has explosive/really bad chemicals in it, FYI. All pop is bad for you, some more than others. Diet pop is a big offender 'cause the fake sugar can cause stroke/brain damage/tumours. Mountain Dew also uses another additive which is actually worse than some of the others.
