HARGEISA (SomalilandPress)–The chairman of UCID Party Eng Faisal Ali Warabe is concerned about the decline in the standard of living of the Somaliland people as he believes that for many Somalilanders conditions are worse now than they were in 1988. The chairman, who is in Finland declared that he and his associates will make changes in the constitution of the party and separate the chairman of the party and the candidate for the presidential elections. Faisal indicated that they are doing this to save the country from devastation and will be inviting people with political ambitions to the party.
In exploring issues related to development and stability Faisal has explored the situation in Somaliland since the 1950’s; “We have been marking 18th May with celebration, which is the day twenty years ago when Somaliland regained its independence and declared itself to be an autonomous region/state. I would like to look back where from where we are, what we have done for our country, where we are going and whether we can build a prosperous nation.
It is 30 years since the start of the armed struggle of SNM (1981), 20 years from the declaration of the republic of Somaliland. The mission and effort of Somalilanders is based on one thing-nationalism. It is obvious that the Somaliland people sacrificed everything they had to achieve common goals and sometimes they were subjected to massacre. Somaliland has also endured 20 years of lack of recognition, lack of financial support that has resulted in economic problems, unemployment and widespread famine, where 80% of the people are under the poverty line.
The problem of Somaliland people centers on the lack of effective politicians. From 1950, when politicians emerged as the new leaders of Somaliland people, there developed a belief that the politicians at the time failed to lead people and country as expected. In 1981-1991, our politicians failed to come up with a plan and a policy to lead the country after Siad Barre and this resulted in the outbreak of the civil wars of 1992, 1994-1996. It is unfortunate that lack of vision, strategies and clear policies brought about the civil war which led to the segregation of the Somaliland people and the lack of recognition.
Thus, where are we today? In 1996 and after the clannish meeting, Moh’ed Haji Ibrahim Igal was re-elected, the Somaliland people lived in a peace. The international community recognize that Somaliland is very peaceful compared to the rest of Somalia. From 2001, Somaliland became more democratic. There was the vote for the constitution in which 97% of the Somaliland people voted ‘yes’ and there was the subsequent formation of the multi-party political systems. There were elections of the institutions of the government. They were judged to be fair and free elections.
Although we have adopted democracy, there are other sides like economic development, basic community services, health and education systems, economic infrastructure including roads, airports and ports, employment and the establishment of governmental institutions that are lower in standard than they were in 1988. But, the worst thing is that people are losing the sense of patriotism. Tribalism, competition and division among Somaliland people seem to be growing. Anti-Somaliland people are also getting stronger and increasing in number.
On my side, for the last 18 years (since 1992), I have sacrificed my soul and property for Somaliland. I would advise for two things
1. Although I have not reached my goal to make Somaliland a recognized country where there is justice and unity, I am ready to make changes in the constitution of UCID Party. We are separating the chairman of the party from the candidate of for presidential elections; there will be a chairman of the party and at the same time somebody else will be the candidate for the presidential elections. We are also inviting ambitious people with a desire to serve to compete for positions.
2. I would advise the President of Somaliland Ahmed Moh’ed Moh’oud Siilaanyo to hold a quick national meeting to discuss ways to overcome the hard times and difficult tasks that lie ahead for the country”.

Mr. Waraabe statement if out of context and short-sighted to say the least. We all know our situation and there is nothing that he could add. Talking like shows that he does not want to give up the Party Chairmanship at any cost, and he is talking of sacrificing for Somaliland. This is bad. Furthermore, he says that the anti-Somaliland is increasing by the day,[What is that suppose to us] and what he is getting. Is he blaming the current ruling party? Well the Chairperson of the ruling party has given up the Chairmanship to his second-in-line. Why don't you do the same if you care for Somaliland?
Most of the young and Hargeisawis were upbeat in the early days of UCID and they were ready to make the change, but it came apparant that my friend Faysal is lacking the vision and politics to run this party and that is the reason many back off, except few who believe in him for obvious reason. It is about time that he relinguishes the Chairmanship to enable others in the party to rebuild and compete the next election.
Don't feel bad; all of sub-Saharan Africa had disgusting living standards. That is the price you get for being Black and from the dilapidated continent. Somaliland is no different.
What I don't understand is why doesn't the Somaliland government buy fishing vessels and sell it's fish? Overfishing will not be an issue because many countries do fish farming now. Millions of dollars could be made every year and thousands of people would get jobs.
The key here is to establish government run corporations. A corporation that deals with farming, a corporation that deals with communications but at the same time allow private industry to compete.
How about building a beach resort a few kilometers away from Berbera for tourism?
I am sorry but Africans, and Somalis, don't think logically.
I could run the government right now and I would of made sure some of the humanitarian money went into building corporations that the government can get revenue from.
Instead, 80percent of Somaliland consists of khat chewing unemployed people who rely on their cousins from Canada, UK and USA to send them $100 a month to survive.
Also don't forget the main problem in sub-sahara africa is corruption that is why there is so many problems
The Ucid Chairman ENGineer Faisel Ali Warabe and the Ucid Party officials and supporters
have every right to reorganize their party to catch up with the changing and challenging times of
of Somaliland with the IC real world political arena. It's a real fact that both Ucid and Udub are way
behind the progressive Kulmiye party when it comes to timely organisational aspects. When the
reorganizing Ucid Party is the party's business I don't see the second stage of calling for a meeting
of some sort. The Kulmiye Govt. has hardly been in power a year out of its term in office and this
Govt. is really showing progressive results which was lacking in previous Regimes and I fail to understand
the fears of Chairman Faisel's justification. Perhaps the respected Ucid Chairman could explain
the basis of his fears.
Cheers.
Mr, Faisal question for you,, when you stepping down?
Faisal, Your own party and its supporters deserted you after two heavy defeats in last two general elections so how can you lecture the rest of the population? I don't know!
I used to support UCID but had changed my mind sometime ago. I don't think Faisal cares much about the poor in Somaliland because if he cared he would not be living a comfortable live in far away Finland but would be walking the dusty streets of our towns and villages to bring about change he peaches to us from abroad.
Do us a favour Faisal and step down with grace.
Eng. Faisal is blaming Somaliland politicians for all the ills of the nation. (well, he is one of them!).
He concludes by advising the president to hold a "quick national meeting".
My question is: Why does H.E. the Chairman, don't request his UCID MPs in parliament to raise a motion? Why is he "advising" the President? Is the President a King of Somaliland?
Eng. Faisal is licking his wounds! Leave him alone as he moans for repeated political setbacks. Anyway, how is his familial connection to Hawiye blurs his vision for independent and viable Somaliland? BTW, what do Sarah Palin and Eng. Faisal have in common?
So what if he has family ties to Hawiye? Many Somalilanders do. Does that mean that Somalilanders with Hawiye ties blurs his vision for an independent Somaliland? Absolutely not.
And the Hawiye are the most pro- Somaliland people outside of Somalia. There are lots and lots of them who respect the wishes of Somalilanders. Ahmed Diriye Ali and Farah Aidid both said they support Somaliland in whatever it aims to do, including independence.
There are many Hawiye in Somaliland too who support Somaliland recognize and contribute to the Somaliland economy and the betterment of the society.
AW-gass"S comments are too sophisticated. I don't agree with your cheap shots that
Ahmed Diriye ALI and Hawiye leaderships are in favour of Somaliland Independence from
Somalia, they never were and continue to remain deadly against the the Somaliland recognition.
AHN GEN. Aideed was the only positive figure head that worked well with the SNM freedom
struggle and that too his USC was engineered by the SNM leaderships until the end when
sadly the USC was hijacked by the underground Manifesto rogue gangsters headed by ALI Mahdi.
The hawiye you embarcing lost their credibilities since that manifesto capsized the USC
mechanisms. You could see the Hawiye political arena has never been off the ground since
1st July 1960. The Somalilanders engineered the Dir and USC but unfortunately in both cases
the Hawiye failed to understand their significance and the smarter Darod Hudhud took the
advantage to foul finger around sidda linqaxa haamaha. Hawiye darod ba sidda kaneecada dheggah
kaga yawleeyah. Laba aan is dhaamin iga dheh. Somaliland at this juncture remains neutral to
what's happening in Somalia dirty conflicting politics and goes alone persuing it's real goals.
Cheers.
the fact that your talking about tribes such even more proves that somaliland is just a one clan state. Somalilanders talk about people from the south migrating to somaliland as if they are foreginors i got a question for you somalilanders how do you distuinguishe between a somalilander and a somali?
All you have to do is talk and they can tell where the heck you came from….It's easy
the same way you distinguish Djiboutians from Somalis from Somalia….same language or even ppl but the country is the only thing that distinguishes them….and obviously the dilect too…..somalilanders have more similar dialect with djabutians than south somalis
lol okay am sorry buts thats got to be the stupieds reason to distguish between people,so would you consider a isaaq person that has the southern dilect as a "somalilander"?
Brother AW-Gass,
I disagree with you comment about Hawiyes, just because Mr. Faisal has ties with Hawiye does not mean it is a bad thing.
Please don't bring Tribalist or Qabilism to Somaliland, let us keep our country free from Trial discrimination.
Thankyou
did he said (Eng Faisal) that he is going to separate the party chair man from the presidential candidate in order to save the nation from starvation, or my be my haweye connection blurred my vision?
Somali politics shape by clans. Depending where the clan located and it's history will tell you between "Somalilander" and Somalia but the have Somali name incommon. Those who live cities like Burco and Hargisa considered themselves Somalis-somalilander while people in Borame and LasAnod see themselves Somali-Somalia. Although there is always small number of people who go both ways depending personal interest or lack of vision. People in Mogadishu would be happy to break up Somali same like those in Garowo and Kismaayo. Baydhabo people will do the same;therefore, like it or not Somaliland is one man and one clan missions.
People are not fools and the recognition some people put too much time won't happen since your nex doors neighbors particularly Samar on and Harti are already distancing themselves from your decision of break up. Intaada gooso oo inteyda daa, take your parts out of Somalia but leave our parts for us so we can decide for ourselves. Sagaaro Kaadideeda oo la arkaayey Aastaa. Xb waqtigu yaanu inaga dhicin 20 oo geeri go'ana looma baahna nabadana dhawra.
You are so confused! Somaliland is Not Somalia so stop comparing and go to Garoowe.com where you belong.
Somaliland = No Qabilism Wars, Okay Mr Maxam?
Somaliland= Brains
Somaliland= Growing Economy
Somaliland= Peace
Somaliland= Moving Foward
And thenh you talk about Qabil. Please leave te Jahil stuff behind because Somaliland is past it.
Allahu Akbar, and may the best win.
Defeat after defeat a disgruntled and the unpredictable Faisal lets steam off without much thought. Mind you he never once during his campaigns expressed this sort of doom and gloom. In my opinion both UCID party and Somaliland will be better off without him and I have my suspicions that he will not relinquish the party's chairmanship even if the means it's demise.
We should have a law in our constitution that forces all parties to have a registered membership base in every region and regular democratic elections within their ranks for chairmanship and other important posts. If we get such provisions in our constitution, I am sure neither Faisal Cali nor Daahir Riyaale will talk politics again.
Why is everyone attacking Eng. Faisal for? Have some respect guys and calm down!
Its really bad manners to insult people behind their backs.
I am sure Eng.Faisalloves Somaliland a lot and wanted to give back something in return and if lives in Finland,s owhat? all of you commentators are living outside Somalialnd yourselves! lol.
At least he went in and gave a try lets not turn this into ugly situation and keep it calm.
