LONDON — UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, speaking on Thursday in the House of Commons said Somalia presented the greatest challenges facing the modern world. He said for twenty years Somalia has not had a functioning government and “presents the most acute symptoms of a failed state”. He made the remarks during a debate that saw Somaliland and security topics dominate the talks.
Highlighting the two-fold humanitarian difficulties, Mr. Hague stated that between 50,000 and 100,000 people, mostly children starved to death in Somalia last year alone.
He said unless confronted Somalia’s problems are expected to rise and British interest both in the region and home soil were in the firing line. “We need to do so to reduce our vulnerability to terrorist attacks, to maintain the free flow of trade on which our economy depends, to limit our exposure to the effects of uncontrolled migration, to increase the support that we can give to education and economic development in Somalia and to support the stability of a part of Africa where our country has a great many interests and our nationals have been shown to be vulnerable,” he said.
The British Foreign Secretary reiterated that recent positive developments in Somalia and Britain’s pledge to tackle Somali crisis have convinced London to host a conference that will address terrorism, security, maritime piracy and governance.
“This moment of opportunity is why, in two weeks’ time, we will host the London conference on Somalia, bringing together 50 countries and organisations,” he told the lawmakers.
Cardiff South and Penarth MP Alun Michael, intervened and raised the issue of Somaliland and how its situation is different to Somalia. He urged the Foreign Secretary to retouch its status.
“What the Foreign Secretary says about the situation in Somalia is absolutely true, and his interest in it is greatly appreciated not only in this country but, I am sure, worldwide. Will he take the opportunity to clarify the situation with regard to Somaliland, about which there is sometimes misunderstanding? As he said, there has been no effective central Government in the former Somalia for more than 20 years, but there has been a very effective Government in Somaliland, albeit that it has not been recognised as a separate state. Will he take the opportunity to acknowledge that difference between the situation in the north and the south?” Mr Alun said.
Mr. Hague re-echoed the Welsh Minister’s remarks and admitted that Somaliland did not possessed Somalia’s undesirable characteristics. He stated that he recently spoke to President Silanyo by telephone to persuade him to attend the London conference. He emphasised that it was important for Somaliland to share its experience of peacebuilding to the region.
Conservative MP for Croydon South, Richard Ottaway said he welcomes Mr. Alun’s two-state solution but questioned the Welsh Minister’s motives. “I have to confess that I have an open mind on that question (two-state solution), but I find it slightly ironic that a Welsh MP who believes in the United Kingdom should be calling for such a separation in Somalia,” he said.
MP Alun refuted the remarks by the Conservative MP saying Somalilanders do not have the choices the people of Wale have.
Mr. Ottaway confessed that MP Alun had valid response and pointed out that “countries that function well should stay together, but those that do not function well obviously do not want to know about each other.”
Tony Baldry, Second Church Estates Commissioner, said he was part of a parliamentary delegation that visited Somaliland for the first time in 2004. As well as describing the warm hospitality they received, he spoke eloquently about the history of Somaliland and Great Britain. He welcomed the Prime Minister’s initiatives and the upcoming conference.
Martin Horwood, Liberal Democrat MP for Cheltenham declared that recognizing Somaliland as an independent nation was complicated but called on the UK government to support its development. He also called for the establishment of greater development cooperation between Hargeisa and London. The MP further highlighted that Somaliland presented difficulties for neighboring Ethiopia when it comes to recognition since the country has “complicated political history with Somalia”. He urged the UK government to encourage nations such as Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa to lead the way for Somaliland’s international recognition.
Seema Malhotra, Labour MP for Feltham and Heston stated that Somaliland will attend the conference as a separate entity to Somalia’s various delegations. “Somaliland will be represented in its own right at the conference. Will the Government continue to acknowledge the separate and successful development achieved by Somalilanders, who have turned Somaliland into a beacon of democracy in Africa?” Seema said.
Labour MP for Wrexham said he welcomes President Silanyo’s commitment to the London conference and that his presence could offer life long lesson to the rest.
Henry Bellingham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Africa and the United Nations), said the upcoming conference offered Somaliland golden opportunities to explain its case to the international community. “By coming on to the international stage, he (President Silanyo) will meet a large number of international statesmen and Heads of State. He will be able to explain to them what he has done that has worked in Somaliland and why it has been so successful,” he said.
Mr. Bellingham also revealed that the UK government was trying to sign a trilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Somaliland and Seychelles on the issue of pirate transfer. He said the UK government was waiting for President Silanyo to pass his draft piracy law and prisoner transfer law. He added they will discuss the issue further during Silanyo’s visit to London in two weeks’ time.

UK is a friend of Somaliland and your support is highly appreciated. We specially acknowledge the works of Sir Alun and the Friends of Somaliland committee.
If Somalia was people like Great Britain who respect others and not use violence, intermediate, rape and killing as a solution, the people of Somaliland would be the first to fix Somalia. Somalia only understands guns, this is what we are running away from.
UK needs to increase its assistance for Somaliland in particular in the security sector to tackle piracy, terrorists and other threats.
Somalilanders fought for UK during WW2, today UK has to back Somaliland's war. I am sure if we sign this MoU on maritime piracy, we can take another step forward, so we urge the President to speed up the laws and sign the treaty…it will pave the way for other security assistance.
recognising somaliland was one of the immortant agreements between the two parties in order to for the coalition.
Barack Obama, cares less whether he receives one vote of Somaliweyn or not, since he will get enough vote from the rest of American who are already committed to his cause.
why not mentioning the ww1
The podium is set for us, and it's only waiting us to make use of this occasion and present our care diligently and comprehensively. It's make it or break it, and I hope our President will un-dust his experience and get the ears of those delegates.
Somaliland of all age and gender must support our President in this conference, and contribute what we should tell the International Community that is attending this conference. God, bless Somaliland and protect our endeavor as always, because you have done for us much, and you have saved us many hurdles that our enemy has put on way, since we join those Wanlaweyns.
I think it is time for the Somali people in the north tell their politicians and others who over and over again lie to them say to them "enough is enough!!" Come on guys, the British government is not talking about what is called "Somaliland" and it is not interested in recognizing parts of Somalia [Period]. This conference is for Somalia (sadly diivded into mini tribal states including Somaliland). Therefore, this project of getting recognition for parts of Somalia as an indepedent state is not working, will not work, and is dead!! It is better for the Somali people in the north to be realistic, and understand that no one is interested in dividing Somalia. and Somalia is not Sudan!. So, it would be great if the people in the north take leadership for the Somali situation and held Somalia become peaceful, democratic and inclusive state.
The British government invited us Somaliland the land of the true somalis and not hutus and jabarti remnant,. The British want somaliland to teach you walaweyn and faqash how to be civilised and how to be human beings and not marauding savages, for you to stop butchering each other. And I promise you after that lesson under our tutalage you will become civilised human beings.
Nobody is dividing anything. We were divided we when came into the deemed and gloomed union. And we were divided for the last 20 years and that is how it going to stay. So, don't lie to yourselves, spare yourselves the disappointment of the outcome of London Conference. Union is dead and so is Somaliweyn! So, get used to it and move on. The ship had left long ago and there is no turning back.
I am shocked that people like you still hang on to Somalia. We have been apart for a very long time and you have killed us and raped us and murder us and to date have no remorse about it!!! now why on earth will we wait for you to finish yourselves off and then join us??? Somali land was a country who chose to join Somalia and now changed their mind, just accept the situation and focus on getting your part save place to live.
I think it is time for the Somali people in the north tell their politicians and others who over and over again lie to them say to them "enough is enough!!" You're in the wrong forum buddy. Take your calaacal to the Wallaweyn websites!
All the question/answer sessions clarify that the British Govt. is not prepared to recognize Somaliland as a seperate entity. I think the Somaliland people will be very angry with the Silaanyo Govt. after
the Somalia London Conference when the Somaliland delegation will come back home with a new
face of part of Somalia roadmaps being engineered by the UN/IC key players. What form such
public anger would take is subject to speculation.
Cheers.
Silanyo has found himself in an mess of his own making, that is bigger than he is willing to admit.
I'm keeping my powder dry until after the London Conference.
Let me tell you all that recognizing somaliland is not possible this time. The reason is the country which we are leaving behind (Somalia) is in a state of mess, thus there is no one to negotiate with an exist agreed strategy. Take Ethiopia and Eritrea, Sudan and south Sudan, When those countries become independent it's was the agreement between the two sides to agree that they are no longer one country but two separate ones. Ethiopia was the first country to recognize Eritrea so was Sudan the first country to recognize south sudan. So recognition for somaliland is only possible after somalia wakes up from the comma they are in now. Somalia has to agree that somaliland is a separate country then other countries can do the same thing. However NOTE Somalia will never recognize somaliland! Why because without somaliland rest of Somalis are nothing but lost. So what is the solution then one may ask? well it's simple if Somalia refuses to recognize somaliland after they become peaceful the only option remaining is to go to war with somaliland! This will create a total mess, killing and all sort of wrong things, but it's the last resort. I believe somaliland can benefit from going to war with Somalia then the so-called UN will rush in to save people from being killed, then the two sides will come to the table to agree on something, somaliland's demand can only be met by recognizing it. Somalis then don't have no option but to say yes we do recognize them.
I were president of somaliland i would have banned everyone from south Somalia from coming to somaliland, all the somaliander's in Somalia political game i would have killed them once they come back as they are traitors. Basically make live hell for Somalis that only if they make my hell too. Neither somaliland nor Somalia is i believe going to back off with their current status and demands. Note somaliland will not become recognized while Somalia is a mess, and Somalia will never become peaceful while somaliland is unrecognized.
The British government pointed out that recognition should start from the region. and they did not at all closed the doors for Somaliland. And this position is share by all most major powers of the world. What is wanted from Somaliland is to find a tinpot African dictator and convince that dictator to recognized Somaliland and others will follow suite.
Whatever you say, we know you are haters and you will never be in peace, because of your sickness my fellow Wanlaweyn. Why don't you stop crying after the people who made peace and support their people? Somaliland has come to us and its going now, and that is for sure, so make your house in order, insted of hating those who gave your dying children something to put their mouth.
Somalilanders have the right to go their way, and not law forbids this. Therefore, stop crying and make peace with yourselves and to your neighbours. History will not repeat itselve in this particular issue of Somaliland.
Queen Elizabeth II, David Cameron, William Hague, look, how desperate people are trying to impersonate the British House of Common and even the Queen.
" … Henry Bellingham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Africa and the United Nations), said the upcoming conference offered Somaliland golden opportunities to explain its case to the international community. “By coming on to the international stage, he (President Silanyo) will meet a large number of international statesmen and Heads of State. He will be able to explain to them what he has done that has worked in Somaliland and why it has been so successful,” he said.
To those who were saying earlier: Thank you, Mr William Hague for forcing Somaliland to join Somaliland, eat your words and hearts up! Qudaanjow, ku quuso!
Somaliland is attending the conference with a good reputation, good governance, and as a beacon of democracy in Africa and not as a fall State for 20 years. The world is asking Somalia to emulate what Somaliland is doing right and to take a note.
Goodby Somaliland and welcome back Somalia. The great Eagle of Khatumo State is in London and he already signed the oil deal with Norwegian Seadril Company. Soon they will start exporting oil and they are hard dying unionist of Sooomaaaliaaa. Sayunaaraa suckers.
Look at these people's shortsighted thinking, you are so obsessed with Somaliland to the extent of not seeing the dangers dawning to the failed state of yours. Among the possible outcome of that meeting is either to partition somalia and be ruled by Kenya and Ethiopia or putting somalia under UN trustiship. So, instead of wishing ill to Somaliland why dont you preapare yourself to welcome Augostino Mahiga as your new president.
From the outset day one of the Union between Somaliland and Somalia on 1st July 1960
throughout , before and after 1991, there never were any real peace between the two Somalis.
And the International key players have all the records with absolute knowledge.
However, after Somaliland pulled out of the parterned fall of the Union, it started to come out clean
of the rabble by democratic reforms involving all the Somaliland Civil Societies. On the other hand
Somalia went deep into the rabble and lost its Sovereignty powers. Now Somalia is no longer in
the hands of her people. For Somalia to come out of the beyond repair abyss the warlords
C/laahi Yusuf and others plunged into, the causes of remedy is obviously not in the roadmaps I&II
and the Somalia London Conference due 23 February 2012, but rather recognizing the Democracy
of Somaliland first..applying a two state solutions from the outset..anything less, is in my view
another failure. If the British Govt. betrays her best ally the Somaliland for Somalia's new policies,
then perhaps Somaliland could find other friends instead of the British Govt's defiance policies.
Cheers.
This website is owned by Ethiopians or Djiboutians. Something tells me real Somalilanders are being blocked and comments deleted. Ha How desperate?

Poor Dhulo! Haven’t you known yet the last update on the Katumo issue? Your Dr. Glaydh was told by the US Amb in Adis to throw his Kastumo away and leave Dhulos join Africa’s beacon of democracy before it’s too late.
He was told the world was fully aware of how the people of Somaliland suffered under the failed union and how they are well off today (including his fellow Dhulos) who never had more than one high school in their territory let alone a university or college. IC blatantly said to him no more fabrications and reality twists! No more foolish slogans! Just get along with Somalilanders or let them alone.
Abandoned by Maj-land who controls the TFG, he and his clique are to face the bitter reality.
This is what he said when he arrived in London “Waxaanu aragnay dawlado nalooga horeeyey oo Somaliland cabsan. Waxaa la geliyey in soomali oo dhami isugu tagtay oo la xasuuqay taasoo markii danbena ku kaliftay inay soomalia kaa goostaan”.
Have you got the point?
Poor Dhulos!
Somalia is DUMB without Somaliland that's why they can't let it go!
In short, SOMALILAND has Fulfill the interest of Christian policy makers and FATICAN agenda and London MTG would for the first time include in Somali roadmap with the issue b/w Somalia and Somaliland, and would assing Ogostina Mahiga to work on the new roadmap until the the time framed to take referunden of Somaliland people sponsered by UN.
