DAR ES SALAAM, June 27 At least 45 illegal immigrants believed of Ethiopian and Somali origin have died from suffocation in a truck in central Tanzania on the way from Kenya to Malawi, media reports said on Wednesday.
The country’s Deputy Home Affairs Minister Pereira Ame Silima said at least 45 foreign nationals died, most of whom were elders, and the younger ones who survived were very weak and some of them in critical conditions.
The authority is still investigating the incident and searching for the truck which carried them, he said, adding when the driver discovered the tragedy he dumped all the 113 passengers in the nearby bush and fled the scene.
The incident occurred in Chitego village in Kongwa District, central Tanzania, according to the official newspaper, the Daily News. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the neighboring Kiteto District Hospital for preservation while some 70 survivors were being treated in hospitals and questioned by police.
Illegal immigrants from lawless Somalia and drought-hit Ethiopia have been smuggled into Kenya where they move further south to Malawi usually as their final destination.
