Mogadishu, 8 May 2009 (Somalilandpress) – Unknown aeroplanes which are said to be low flying have been spotted tonight in various residential areas in Garowe [north-eastern Somalia], Puntland region. The true identity of these planes are not yet known, however, some have said that they belong to the American Navy based along the Somali coast and particularly Puntland and are fighting piracy and terrorism in the Horn of Africa.
One of the planes flew at a very low range and could be seen by residents of Garoowe who are concerned about possible military operation that might be carried out by these planes along the Puntland coast.
The American government has been considering carrying out military operations along the Puntland coast in the last two days although the Puntland administration officials have rejected the possibility of such an operation taking place saying that it is not acceptable to the people and stability of the Puntland region in general. Many politicians are of the view that Somali pirates should not be attacked if a meaningful and lasting solution is to be found to the problem of piracy.
Politicians in Puntland have accused some foreign countries of rejecting the ongoing talks between people of Puntland and pirates and would rather see the problem of piracy spiral out of control.

KENYA: Warming up to Somaliland
Abdinasir,
Mystery airplanes in NE Somalia.
Did anyone ask the sources what they HEARD? Was it a jet, turboprop, or reciprocating prop?
Important question. Answer if possible.
Thanks,
So what did the plane look like?!
This is not a rare occurance, nor is it something that can be linked (only) to piracy or limited to puntland. On several occasions when on holiday to somaliland i have spotted earoplanes hovering over cities in somaliland, planes that didn't belong to our airlines. Probably American from the Djabouti base
