Hargeisa, 11 April 2009 (Somalilandpress) — The Commander of Somaliland’s presidential guards, Mr Abokor Sulub angrily denied that his forces took part in an incident where police fired at a crowd of demonstrators outside Opposition Kulmiye Party headquarters on the 6th of April. He said his forces were not involved in the incident.
The crowd of Kulmiye supporters were marching towards the Kulmiye Headquarters to honor the 28th Somali National Movement (SNM) memorial day. The event commemorated almost three decades of SNM, which was found 6th April 1981 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The primary reason of SNM was to overthrow Siad Bare’s dictatorship and advocated a mixed economy and a neutral foreign policy. Many of Kulmiye senior leaders including the chairman, Mr Ahmed M Mohamoud belonged to the Somali National Movement (SNM) organisation.
Ismael Adan Osman, one of the opposition members accused the presidential guards of firing shots at the crowds and declared that the attack was unprovoked. There was a tense stand-off between police and the Kulmiye supporters after the shots were fired, many Kulmiye supporters accused Rayale’s administration of trying to assassinate Kulmiye leader, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud. Mr Osman said that the presidential guards were disguised in Police uniforms and demanded a full public inquiry.
Mr Sulub accussed Mr Osman of misleading the public and creating friction between his forces and the people which could easily explode into large-scale violence.
Mr Sulub claims that Mr Osman was sacked from the government and has nothing left in him but to make false allegations against his guards and everyone working for the government.
The police fired in the air to disperse the crowds, the security was tight but the demonstration ended peacefully and no one was harmed.
