Djibouti, 9 April 2009 (Somalilandpress) – Massive demonstrations hit Djibouti in support of the incumbent president, Ismail Omer Gelleh. The country’s constitution states that if the president should leave the office when he finishes two terms. The riots came in support of the president and the people were demanding more terms for Gelleh.
There have been rumors during the last few weeks that the government might change the constitution in order to give the current president more time. The demonstrators said the president has done a lot for the country and in that case he should remain on power for more time.
It is not specified how long the president will remain on power but changing the constitution will go through the legal channels in order to be changed. If this happens, it will affect the country’s future leaders.
Djibouti is said to be developing dramatically and the economy is growing very fast during the term of the current president. Mr. Gelleh is also involved in the horn of Africa’s politics in general after several reconciliation meeting were held for Somalia.
