Burao, 31 March 2009 (Somalilandpress) — A four day technology conference kicked off on Monday in Burao University campus designed to promote and address modern technology needs in Somaliland. The conference drew over one hundred technology enthusiasts on the first day and is the first of it’s kind in this region.
Prof. Ahmed Jama, a technology consultant from UNDP, said the seminar was meant to assess technology in Somaliland and find innovations so that the country is able to plan for future development. The Conference plans to offer a forum to discuss a variety of studies and topics.
“We need to collect information about technology use in this country so that it will be able to make a better technology and innovation policies in the future” Said Prof. Ahmed.
He cited that the participants of this conference were from Togdheer, Sanaag and Sool regions of Somaliland, the next nation-wide conference will be held in the capital, Hargeisa, in the coming months.
The regional administrator of Togdheer condemned the current telecommunication providers saying they have not done enough for this region – telecommunication is still lagging and under-developed.
Ahmed thanked the participants for coming to the Conference and in particular for supporting this important initiative of helping to promote modern technology and innovation in Somaliland, a country that’s yet to be recognized.
Somaliland is bordered by Ethiopia in the south and west, Djibouti in the northwest, the Gulf of Aden in the north, and Somalia in the south. Somaliland maintains good relations with Ethiopia and Djibouti.
