OPINION | February 21, 2012
By:Dr.Yusuf Dirir

Despite 30 years of political, economic and military oppression that climaxed with the genocide in 1988 and all the unrelenting antagonism blistering from Somalia, the people from Somaliland are not bitter and are looking forward to collaborate and live side by side peacefully with Somalia as separate sisterly countries. Not only that, Somaliland can play a major role in finding a lasting panacea for Somalia’s chronic plight.

A healthy Somaliland-Somalia relationship will only be possible if Somalia officially admits and apologizes for the crimes committed against Somalilanders. In addition to that, Somalia must unconditionally recognize the sovereignty of Somaliland. These few noble gestures will safe Somalia from self annihilation and the general feeling of international community’s dissatisfaction that culminated in Somalia’s anarchy will be brought to an end. This is the only way forward and there are no other alternatives.

Putting aside Somaliland’s historical grievances, Somalilanders are really concerned and worried about the future of Somalia and its people. The people of Somalia are loosing their sovereignty and everything else they hold dear including their dignity. This is not acceptable to me or to any other Somali with a drop of self respect in his/her blood. Therefore, the situation in Somalia must get the attention that it humanly deserves from no one else but from its own sons and daughters.

The Somalia people must pause for a minute and resume using their brains; they must stop blaming their self inflicted mortifying wounds on others and begin to find smart methodology for resolving their own problems without external help. They must realize that the international community is not going to breast-feed them, but will take advantage of their weaknesses. It is very naive not to take into consideration that international relations are solely based on interests. Just have a look at the agenda of the up coming London conference on Somalia. This must be a wake-up call for all Somalia people and encourage them to come together and clear the chaos in their own home.

Recognizing the Sovereignty of Somaliland and getting it off the way, will help the people of Somalia to concentrate in resolving their problems. There is no time left for Somalia to shamefully waste in destroying what Somaliland has achieved through wisdom and hard work.

It is obvious that the international community is ready to recognize Somaliland with or without Somalia’s consent; therefore, Sheikh Sharif and his squad must surprise the world and have the bravery to announce the recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty, before anyone else does. At that moment history will take note of what takes place in the London conference. It is the choice of Somalia’s current leadership to sign their names on either the bright side or the dark side of world history.

Somaliland will not negotiate on its sovereignty, but will be more than willing to help its sister country to achieve peace and prosperity. There is a lot to be gained through friendship between Somaliland and Somalia and to accomplish this, its prerequisite on Somalia’s leaders to make history in London on February 23, 2012. It is about time for all Somalis to show their greatness and forgiveness towards one another, in order to salvage what remains of Somalia from terrorists and international scavengers.

To all the Diaspora Somalis, let us forget the hypocritical and empty “United Somalia” slogan for a moment and support the two state solution. Let us work hard to bring peace and prosperity for Somalia, Somaliland and to the entire Horn of Africa region. Let us show this in our up coming political rallies around the world on February 22nd and February 23rd, 2012. Long live Somaliland! Long live Somalia!

I like this article. Somalia is not our foe, they are our people, our blood, our kins, race and we don't hate Somalia nor do we want their misery. Their misery is ours too and I hope they let go of these empty 'united Somalia' slogan go. Somalia is now seen as a failed state and the independence of Somaliland no longer depends on them but I hope our recognition comes none other than from Somalia so that we can say in the future our brothers and sisters of Somalia accepted our self-determination and moved on, and Somaliland shall stand up for Somalia and help Somalia stand on her two feet firmly in every possible way. Somalia will be resurrected soon inshAllah and they will no longer need African soldiers in their soil to run the country that suppose to be for Somalis.

Somalis need to apologize to each other for the bad things that they have done to each other, its not only Somalilanders that suffered under the dictatorship of Siad Bare, North, South, East and West of Somalia all suffered so to say Somalia needs to apologize is a just a joke, its also a wishful thinking that any Somali president will recognize Somaliland, may be the writer should have made another suggestion wich is since its impossible for any Somali president to recognize Somaliland, Somaliland should give up the idea of separation and accept the federal system.

Such a lie, Somalia people have been inflicted with shaydaan influences for too long. Somaliland will be protect by Allah and inshalah and one who dares tries disturb Somaliland's peace will dealt with. I think these koonfureed mafia people need to wake up and stop being jealous and showing hatred towards Somaliland. All hate comments I see written about Somaliland just shows that Somaliland has to be a recognized because how can innocent people live in peace when pirates and terrorist and mafia influenced moryaans holding Somaliland as political hostages because they can't see a fellow somali muslim prosper they rather see Somalilanders surfer thats why the union failed so miserably we cared too much for them and cost us everything we had and when we try rebuild with peace they want destroy what we have again.

Yusuf Dirir, It is an honourable and noble suggestion, but Walaweyn is too misanthropic and too obsessed with Somaliland. It seems like we are their missing arms and legs and that they can't function without Somaliland. It would a noble gesture if Sharif surprises the world, apologize for past genocide and recognize Somaliland. It will heal Somaliland's wound and grievances to a certain degree. I don't think it is going to happen because being good, dignified, and making right the wrong is not in their blood.

"… The people of Somalia are loosing their sovereignty and everything else they hold dear including their dignity. This is not acceptable to me or to any other Somali with a drop of self respect in his/her blood. Therefore, the situation in Somalia must get the attention that it humanly deserves from no one else but from its own sons and daughters." This statement brought tears in my eyes. I don't think that they have a clue how easy Somalila could slip away from their hands.

A dignified and self respecting person is supposed to show gratitude to someone, who shows a good gesture towards him/her. But in this case it is different, as always the Somalia people spite on the hand that is extended for peace and friendship. They even cut the hand that feeds them, look at their comments on this thread. This is Waloweeyn's (Somalia people) in a gratitude gear, being vulgar is their nature.

I am glad that this article of good gesture towards Somalia demonstrates the goodness in Somaliland. One doesn't need to look further to find the fabric of the Somalia people and their ungratefulness.

It was Joseph Goebbels; the chief propagandist of Hitler who said “If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth”.
Separatists in northern Somalia repeat a few misconceptions and fabrications so often that the sad thing is those lies have become their own truth.

Myth#1: Everyone in the former British protectorate of Somalia wants to secede from Somalia and we will build a country called Somaliland there.
Truth: the people in northern Somalia are not homogenous and many regions want to be part of a united Somalia.

Myth#2: Unlike southern Somalia, there is peace and tranquility in Somaliland.
Truth: There is fighting raging now between Somaliland forces and locals in Buuhoodle. The tribal clashes in northern Somalia are happening because the populations of Khatumo State and Makhir State (East Senaag) do not want to separate from Somalia.

Myth#3: If the international community or Somalia recognizes Somaliland, we can solve all the Somali problems including terrorism and pricy.
Truth: Somaliland cannot solve its tribal feuds and confrontations with other Somali tribes. How can we then believe that they have a solution for any other issue? Everyone knows that there is no tribe in Somalia that did not soak its hands with blood and that can claim fairness and impartiality.

Myth#4: the terrorists are from southern Somalia.
Truth: many terrorists who are waging the unholy war in southern Somalia hail from the north including the leader of this outfit Ahmed Abdi Godane. It is even possible that these northern terrorists are nothing but fifth columnists who are only in the game to weaken southern Somalia so that the separatists can declare an independent state.

Mr. Dirir, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed will not and cannot recognize an entity called Somaliland as a state because that will not be fair to many of our people who do not want to carve up Somalia into mini states. Let anyone who talks about Somaliland independence first accept formation of an independent fact finding commission to tour all the regions in northern Somalia.

    @Allemagan AKA the greatest imposter,

The propaganda you are preaching didn't work for your former dictator boss. It is understandable for you fabricate stories and call them facts, because you are remnant of Siyaad Barre and you are longing for the one clan rule in Somalia and Somaliland. That was settled 21 years ago in the war field and the one clan dictatorship in Somalia and Somaliland will only happen in your nightmares. Your stupid grandiosity says volumes about your character, How dare you say that Sheikh Sharif can not talk about Somaliland independence? Who the hell do you think you are? Your type have gone in dust-pin of history and even if Somalis decide to unite you will always be a criminal and will have no place in Somali politics. You better hide and not raise your head because you stole, rapped and killed!

Allemagan, It was Joseph Goebbels; the chief propagandist of Hitler who said “If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth”. And that is exactly what you bloody Walaweyn are doing to discredit Somaliland and you failed time and again.

Facts #1: Everyone in the former British protectorate of Somaliland wants to secede from Somalia and we will build a country called Somaliland there.
Truth: We know and you know you are lying to yourself. And if you think you can sell it to the International Community, you are delusional.

Facts # 2: Unlike southern Somalia, there is peace and tranquility in Somaliland.
Truth: What a desperate guy! Everybody knows that the majority the people in Buhoodle are enjoying the peace and tranquility in Somaliland except a few disgruntle remnants from the ousted regime who committed a stomach-churning atrocity and massacre against other Somalilanders are now campaigning to join Somalia because of fearful of revenge because they have blood on their hands. … to be contined

  14. Gobaad says:

Facts # 3: If the international community or Somalia recognizes Somaliland, we can solve all the Somali problems including terrorism and pricy.
Truth: It is obvious that you want to water down Somaliland's progress, but the proof in the pudding. The International Community knows very well the difference between Somaliland and the failed state that does not exist any more and the whole world is now trying to rescue.

Facts # 4: the terrorists are from southern Somalia.
Truth: We have already declared our independent state 21 years ago. Get used to it because it is here to stay.

Ahmed Abdi Godane wants to weaken southern Somalia, is a joke! Because of his Ideology and beliefs he came to the rescue of south Somalia when your uncle Abdullahi Yusuf gave the green light a foreign country to invade Somalia because he wanted to cling to power and yet another atrocity in the south. …to be continued

People did not called Somaliland, the best kept secret for nothing. It is, because its peace and stability, its Democratic System, its good governance, and its rapid development. The difference between the two countries obvious to the naked eye. The International Community asking Somalilanders to exhibit how they managed to bring peace, stability, united Somalilanders. So, that Somalia has to learn from them.

Amal, they know their status as a failed state infested with warlords, terrorists, human trafficking, piracy, killings, rape and stravation is the daily occurrence in Somalia and yet they try intensify their attacks on Somaliland to ruffle some feathers. I laugh and say: 'desperate people do desperate things' when I see people like Allemagan comparing Somaliland to Somalia and trying to sell it to the International Community who are singing the praises of Somaliland such as the Beacon of Deomcracy, the Best Kept Secret in Africa and a Peace and Stability in Somaliland asking Somalia to learn from Somaliland who is a source of guidance or inspiration.

    @Gobaad
I am just comparing the delusions of few misguided separatists with the reality of Somalia and Somaliland. You can repeat those lines of " it is us against them" forever to distance yourself from other Somalis. The world only sees one Somalia and the misery is everywhere in our country. How long we can sing for a country that does not exist? You need to refute my argument with facts and not by repeating them. While you at it, let us not rehash your comments from the last few months ad nauseam.

    • Gobaad says:

Allmagan, why would I refute when you were doing was only twisting the facts on the ground and spining it to your satisfaction, comparing Somaliland to that hell-hole Somalia of yours. We are different in everything and have nothing in common. Whether you like it or not, Somaliland exist and will always. Ad nauseam or not, if you don't want to hear it, take a hike oo meel kale oo lagugu cameeyo tag! This site is for Somalilanders.

I know it is difficult for you to comprehend the realities on the ground for you have lived for too long as a spoiled Faqash child, but the fact of the matter is Somaliland will stay free and democratic forever, whether you like it or not. I think you have nothing better to do than writing obscenities. There is no one on earth that you can convince with your false and deluded distortions of facts. Get a life and do something better with your miserable life.
