Somali Migrants in Addis Ababa: Challenges Of Social Integration With Local People thumbnail

HARGEISA, 9 February 2010 (Somalilandpress) – This paper is a partial fulfillment for the requirements to bachelors of degree of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Addis Ababa University. It elaborates the living conditions of the Somali migrants in Addis Ababa and the challenges they meet in the process of interacting with the local people.

This paper contains four main chapters, the first chapter is the proposal where it contains the Background, objectives of the study both the general and the specific objectives, the statement of the problem, methods of the study and also the scope of the study.

The second chapter is about the Literature review where it encompasses elaborations about Human migration, types of human migration, and main causes of human migration and at the same time the consequences and effects that migration brings. In additions, this chapter explains Human social integration and the factors that affect the process of social integration like migration, globalization and insecurity.

Chapter three is the main and key part of the paper; it is the overall job and evaluation of the topic. It is the field research; it contains topics like the general information about the respondents including age distribution, Educational and marital status of the respondents. This chapter is also Included the living style of the Somali migrants at Bole Michael, residence and housing pattern of the Somali migrants, health conditions, the mechanisms that the Somali migrants use to cope with the new environment interms of income generation and self feeding. Beside that, this chapter contains challenges that the Somali migrants face in interacting with the local people and adopting the new living style, How the Somali Migrants influence their new environment socially and economically, and eventually the perception of the local people on their new neighbors (the Somali Migrants).

Finally, the report is finalized with conclusion and some recommendations on which the researcher sees as vital for dealing with the situation in this area.
