Demystifying The Iidoor Scapegoat Phenomena.

Demystifying The Iidoor Scapegoat Phenomena. thumbnail

Dear Abdul Rahman Hariri,
I read your opinion piece entitled, “Response To What ICG Said About Las-Anod”.
Read the ICG’s comments: http://somalilandpress.com/11253/somaliland-las-anod-remains-isolated-as-american-secret-agent-arrives/
While I respect your opinion, you have failed to mention the root cause of Sool region’s problem and as usual you have blamed the usual suspects: Isaaq or Iidoor (Iidoor: a derogatory term) as some of you constantly call the Isaaq tribes. Even if earthquake hits Sool, rest assured some people will blame Isaaq (some of the Somaliland tribes). Something does not change, does it?

But as history attests, it is not the Iidoor that sabotaged much of Sool’s developments but Dhulbhante tribes themselves. For instance, the Sool population fought along Sayyid Mohammed Abudule Hassan for 25 years; then along Gen. Siade Barre for 23 years; then along Col. Abdullahi Yussuf for 20 years (1988-2008). None of these men hail from Somaliland. (Remember: Gen. Siad Barre’s government was commonly referred to by the code name MOD. This acronym stood for Mareehaan (Siad Barre’s clan), Ogaden (the clan of Siad Barre’s mother), and Dhulbahante (the clan of Siad Barre son-in-law Colonel Ahmad Sulaymaan Abdullah, who headed the NSS). These were the three clans whose members formed the government’s inner circle. http://countrystudies.us/somalia/24.htm)

Now I guarantee you whether Somaliland gains its independence or not, some Sool residents will be detonating bombs for the next 20 years.

Total: 25+23+20+20 = 88 years. Now the truth is the people of Sool will go through 88 years of war and destruction before they realise that the rest of the Somali society has progressed and Sool population is left behind. The Kenyan Deputy Speaker Mr. Ma`alimo in fact noticed that Sool was behind other regions in terms of education and developments and he gave a scholarship to ten student from LasAnnod when he visited the city this year.

Worse still, the 25 years that Sool inhabitants supported the Sayyid nothing was built in the region. The 23 years they supported Gen. Siade Barre, instead of rebuilding LasAnnod, they built Mogadishu’s filth rich neighbourhood called Taleex and Kismanyo city (the Promised Land for the Majerten tribes of Puntland). And the 20 years that Col. Abdullahi Yussuf (INA YEY) has entertained them, Sool people rebuilt not LasAnnod but Garowe, Boosaaso cities of Puntland, and Burco and Hargeisa cities of Somaliland.

Col. Abdullahi Yussuf—the notorious butcher of Mogadishu—entertained the Sool population by creating the so-called Daraawiish (dervish) forces; but what he didn’t tell them was: that in fact, the Sayyid and his dervish forces abhorred the Majerten tribes of Puntland more than any other Somali tribes. A proof of this claim could be found in the Sayyid’s poems.

And some people from Sool claim that they support Somali unity but when INA YEY was occupying Mogadishu with the help of Ethiopia’s brutal army, they were waving the Ethiopian flag and supporting the occupation of Somalia.

How come back then Sool politicians, Intellectuals, and Garaads (tribal chiefs) did not hold a meeting in Nairobi to liberate Mogadishu? I double dare you to answer this question!

You know very well before pro-Somaliland Dhulbahante forces captured LasAnnod from Puntland, tribal skirmishing was common in the city; people carried guns freely in the city but not any more.

Today, some Sool Diaspora communities instead of rebuilding schools and hospitals, they send money to make bombs. I have long argued the LasAnnod bombings are the work of Al-Shabab and its local recruits.

And now EJ Hogendoorn, the International Crisis Group’s Horn of Africa Project Director agrees with me by stating, “…the Dhulbahante are unhappy with both Puntland and Somaliland, and Islamist radicals have taken advantage of this to try to cause instability in the area,”. “The interest of these Islamist elements is to foment instability. What is clear is that they have links with Al-Shabab in south and central Somalia,” he adds.

Also recently, the Somaliland President Mr. Dahir Riyale Kahin said that the bombings in LasAnnod and the Al-Shabab terrorist attacks in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland were linked.

Much of the propaganda about Sool region has been debunked in the following articles.
http://www.americanchronicle.com/authors/view/4458

In short, I personally support the self-determination of Sool population—after all, a large number of my family members hail from Dhulbahante tribes; and I would never deny my nephews and nieces’ God-given rights to run the affairs of their province; they should control their region and its resources. The 20, 000 refugees in Kenya (they fled during the Gen. Siad Barre’s era, not when Somaliland took over the city in 2007) should come back home.

And as long as some Sool Diaspora (some of them have not seen the region for 30 years) communities are pouring money into Sool, not to rebuild schools and hospitals but to bomb security forces—which by the way are pure Dhulbahante, “not invading Iidoor”, I am afraid such ill-conceived strategy may eventually trigger a tribal war between Dhulbahante tribes.

Also, it is absolutely embarrassing that although we are in the 21 century, some educated and intellectuals from Sool region are still arguing they want to be part of Puntland because they share tribal lineages with its people. At the same time these people would claim fighting for Somali unity. Give me a break!

And to make matters worse, Puntland now has its own flag and doesn’t count Eastern Sanag and Sool regions as part of its entity.

The truth is if anyone is to be blamed for the Sool fiasco, it would be none other than Dhulbahante themselves. But it is easier to find a scapegoat called—Iidoor, isn’t it?

Thank you,

Dalmar Kaahin

Blame it on the ldoor for your short comings and failures, what have you done for Sool (Dhulbahante diaspora community)? Absolutely ZERO. They have failed their region and community because after the collapse of the Somali national government every community reconstructed their own regions except Sool.

All they do is blame Isaaq and Majerteins from Puntland. Stop running back and forth, today Isaac don't care if you go with Puntland, Majertein dont care if you go with Somaliland because the truth is everyone can see how useless you are as people.

Stop blaming isaaq, tell your people you cant come together, put one tent together and even do a little thing as community together. Shame!

I personally dont want Sool to be part of Somaliland but thats history, once we get our document of recognition, you can go to wherever you like we respect self-determination and I for one will support you as "FREE" Sool because I know at the end of the day you gonna come back to me asking for something.

Dhulbahante only good for xasiidnimo, iyaga is xaasiida, dadka kale ma raban inay hormar gadhan markay iyagu wax qabsan kari wayen waxay kolbaa gees u ordan. Remember this dhulbahante "Hasha labada geel jacayl, midna gadhi waydee, laba gabi dhaxdoodu warabaahu ku gawracaay" thats dhulbahante. Intay iyagu is eryadaan using Somaliland name one day, another time Puntland ayeey ku washeen Isaaq iyo Majerteein, useless people they are.

Isaaq idin ma haysto, naga dhafaa buuqa iyo baroortaa, idinkaa is eryanayaa hadi Somaliland idin haysataana idinkaa so dontaay Somaliland anagu idinamanaan yedhaan, you the one that requested Somaliland's help, we are sick of your cries, daadkiina wax uu qabsadaa stop hiding behind "we are occupied" no one is stopping you from helping your people, you cant build your own authority and you know it thats why you keep running from Hargeisa to Garowe. Wax iskuu faala – the most useless clan in Somalia.

I like reading your articles Dalmar. They are what an educated person who has a world of knowledge writes. Keep it coming.

I used to be angry when Darood people refer to Isaaq as “Iidoor” (whatever that means) and I wanted to know what it means. So, one day I asked an elderly uncle what it meant. Here is what he said: “adeer, it is not a bad word, but they make it sound like a bad word. You don’t need to get angry. I guess they don’t know what it means either.”

  9. Gobaad on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 10:24 pm

Why, Somaliland Press? I was trying to explain one word commonly used by harti, which supposedly means d*e*r*o*g*a*t*o*r*y word as in Iidoor, but it is not.

    Whatever?

Gentlemen, let's not generalize. There are good and bad people in every community. But the overwhelming majority of Sool region community are good and genuine Somalilanders. Sool is inseparable part of Somaliland. Those of Sool region who went stray, we need to help them mature and do the right things for themselves and their country. But by any means, we should not allow them disturb the civil peace.
In Somaliland we have chosen to become a nation. Let's every one us contribute to the building and advancement of this nation, in all aspects – So that the child living in Sool, sanag, Barbara, Hargeisa, Borama, Zayla and every corner of Somaliland is proud of this nation.

  12. Gobaad on Tue, 2nd Feb 2010 10:26 pm

It is mentioned in the above article. So, what is offensive about it?

  13. Dayeer on Wed, 3rd Feb 2010 6:42 am

Thank you Ahmed. This is the mature thinking that we need. It is truly sad to see time and again, the comments sections for articles like this being used for small-minded tribal or clan chants. It is ironic & very telling that this type of negative tribalist discourse is largely absent inside Somaliland, but is unfortunately the rule rather than the exception in the Diaspora. It seems that many in the Diaspora have traveled far in distance while regressing in spirit and mind – what a pity, what a waste of talent and energy!

  14. Somalilander on Wed, 3rd Feb 2010 8:35 am

I personally believe in the right to self determination and the power of the masses. If by in a fair referendum the people of Sool decide to secede from Somaliland then that is their God Given right…

If by referendum the people of Sool decide to remain a part of Somaliland then it is the God-Given right of Somaliland to tow any bitter opposition back into line by any means necessary….
